This dropped a couple weeks ago, but it has finally floated into my ears at a deeply appropriate. This is a concept album about sleeping – the song titles feature specific times of the night and what’s going on as the central character sleeps. Like last year’s Sleepy Tokyo album…a concept record about lack of sleep, experienced through a Japanese workers perspective…Miche dwells on what happens late at night, here creating a soundtrack for a night of rest. This week, I have not been getting much sleep…work is especially taxing, and I have been getting an average of five hours of sleep a day. Better than a lot of folks, but it still leads to a lot of days spent wandering around the office in a drowsy state. Miche’s five-song collection is the closest I’ve come at times to a good night’s sleep.

Miche, who popped up on the PixaPhonic #2 compilation a few months ago, makes ambient music, but one that digs deeper into memories. For that comp, he provided a song evoking memories of elementary school, dotted with samples of children playing. Sound Sleep features less sampling (though on the two songs bookending the album, the sound of insects and birds do appear, observations only someone awake can pick up) and more on sounds blanketing (sorry) the listener. It gets very delicate – the gorgeous “AM 5:05 Predawn” is built around guitar and piano, with strings creeping in as the song builds, while the concluding “AM 6 Good Morning” similarly hovers around piano – but can also get a bit crushing, as on the heavy “AM 2:30 State Of Dreaming.” Yet for the most part it’s a calm recording that pulls you in, subtle shifts moving you along. Not as good as eight hours shut eye, but works in a pinch. Get it here for free.

This morning, Perfume announced a forthcoming album titled Level 3. This put me in an excellent mood, and made me want to listen to some gooey pop music. I jump over to SoundCloud, spirits high, and see a new song from producer Yoshino Yoshikawa called “Kawaii Candy.” It’s labelled as “ULTRAPOP.” Bless your soul Yoshikawa.

“Kawaii Candy” could also be labelled “Kirby’s Dreamland-core” and be on point. It’s a collection of chirpy synths seemingly ripped from a Super Nintendo cartridge, the whole thing bubbling along. There are no words here, because Yoshikawa doesn’t need words when the sounds he lays down shine through so brightly. It’s a colorful track that also doesn’t just get by on being cute…it goes through several stages, and is every bit as compelling as it is rainbow-bright. This would probably work well at lifting someone’s spirits, but heck it wows even when your already bubbly. Listen below.

In case you didn’t know, Make Believe Melodies also has a Tumblr, where I write a bit more about J-Pop and non-Japanese music. A few weeks ago, I wrote about Desire, the new album from Los-Angeles-based artist spazzkid. Read that here. For those who aren’t going to click it – Desire has jumped up to the top of my “albums of the year” list thanks to spazzkid’s ability to convey intimacy through his music. Every track feels like someone breathing down your neck, even the instrumental tracks. It’s a stunner. Go get that here.

On June 24, a remix album of Desire songs drops, and it features A BUNCH of dudes Make Believe Melodies loves. Meishi Smile, DINOSAURUS REX, SAINT PEPSI, Calum Bowen…it’s a loaded line-up. Also offering up remixes are two Japanese artists (mus.hiba, PARKGOLF)…and Make Believe Melodies is happy to premier mus.hiba’s contribution to the Desire remix album!

The atmospheric Vocaloid-manipulator brings his talents…and the voice of Sekka Yufu…to one of spazzkid’s instrumental tracks, “Kokeshi Doll.” The most immediate change comes courtesy of the Vocaloid singing, which obviously change the complexion of the song a lot. Also, like all of mus.hiba’s solo works up to now, everything gets surrounded by a digital haze. The original version of this song carried a dreamy vibe…but mus.hiba’s take turns that into something a bit more bleary eyed. Ultimately, though, it’s that voice that adds the most intrigue. Listen below!

Another day, another electronic music comp combining familiar faces with new ones, so let’s just run through this quick, yeah?

The old: mus.hiba and his Vocaloid partner in art Sekka Yufu contribute “Hitori,” another slow-moving stunner in a song catalog that’s starting to overflow with great work. It’s one of his most glacial numbers yet, a series of whirring synths building up to a in-no-rush singing segment from Yufu’s digi voice before turning into…an even more minimal thump, just drum and a few electronic noises. It closes on one more seasick note. God, this guy is so good. Ryuuta Takaki is also back with a strong track, one teasing a similar iciness while also working in the distant…coos of a baby. The majority of the song, though, is just solid beat work that mutates into something approaching juke music in its second half.

The new: A lot! End’s Not Near’s “What Color” seems like a bit of a pointless ambient number until a beat kicks in and takes the song to an exciting new level. Hyperthink’s appropriately titled “Wonderfuck” jumps between banging and glitched-out sweating. Qeunoirs offers a solid, straight-ahead dance song. That’s only the start. Get the whole thing here.

Wow, has it really been two years since this? That was the moment Merpeoples – an up-to-that point good band who had a few solid tracks but seemed like a perpetual “pretty good” outfit – jumped to a new level, showing they were capable of not only turning a lame-as-hell ‘80s cut into something wonderful, but also of being a great band in a crowded city. They delivered with the following mini-album Metropolis, one of the year’s best, and an absolute stunner from top to bottom. But man…nothing much for two years. The venue where they celebrated their seeming rise to the next level even closed down.

Welp, now they are back with a new song, “Silent Sleep” and nothing has changed. It might not sound much like “Ikenai Rouge Magic” but it does sound like most of the other tracks on Metropolis. It’s built around one great sonic idea…here a chintzy Dodger-Stadium-in-the-’60s organ, a sneaky bass line and vocals. It’s locked-in stuff, tight and borderline militaristic in its delivery. But then things free up a bit and the chorus smacks us in the head. It all builds to a light, airy hook that is such a change from the sorta unsettling verses. It’s a nifty trick, and makes for a very replayable number. So glad to see this guys back.

Time for MAP! This month, we picked Tokyo’s Ykiki Beat and the summer-ready “Garden.” Listen to it…and a bunch of more great songs…below!

Click the play button icon to listen to individual songs, right-click on the song title to download an mp3, or grab a zip file of the full 34-track compilation through Ge.tt here.

Ykiki Beat – Garden
Something something summer jam. It is that time of the year when everybody starts nominating songs as the soundtrack to the warmer months, and here is the strongest candidate from the ever-sprawling Tokyo indie scene. Garden is giddiness reduced to sonic form, powered on by handclaps, neon basslines and yelpy back-up singing. At the center, though, is an irresistible jogging melody that rarely slows down. Recommended if you like: running on really hot days.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Concepto Cero, one of La Plata’s finest record labels, just turned four, and they decided to celebrate by releasing a free compilation with songs from all of their artists. La Guerra Psicológica is an original track by El Perrodiablo, but in this case played in a blues fashion by Excursiones Polares. Both bands are from the Concepto Cero family, so we recommend you to download the whole album and check for their latest releases.

Harmonies and punch-the-air victory songs are generally always in high demand. Sydney’s Gang Of Youths are next. This sounds like Win Butler singing at your birthday and Julian Casablancas singing at your funeral at the same time. A Sudden Light is a loose, belter of an anthem with a modulating chorus, overbearing references to children, drugs and enough harmonic “WHOAHS” to easily make them your new favourite band.

AUSTRIA: Walzerkönig
Much like the recent 4AD signing SOHN, Anna aka The Unused Word is not only working and living in Vienna, but also has her finger on the pulse with her soulful mixture of hip hop and new school electronica. Heaven is taken from her debut EP ∞ (Infinity). The version here is a remix by her labelmate DJ Testa.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Rua, also known as Rua Do Absurdo, is an experimental quintet. Às Bolas De Gude shows their minimalism with beautiful vocal melodies and a marimba guiding us through the song.

CANADA: Quick Before It Melts
Weaving together history, mythology and their own personal experiences, Ketch Harbour Wolves’ new album, Queen City: Volume One, is their first of what is expected to be a multiple disc project that aims to create a sonic map of their home, Toronto. The Good Blood is an excellent gateway into this sprawling, ambitious project, and to Ketch Harbour Wolves’ majestic, cinematic back catalogue.

After reaching recognition and fame through their solo projects, Alex Andwandter and Daniel Riveros (Gepe) – two of the most iconic faces of Chilean pop – got together in a joint project that, under the suggestive name Alex y Daniel, combines their musical curiosity. Their new single Cada Vez Que Invento Algo Sobre Ti (“Every time I make up a story about you”) mixes Andwandter’s penchant for dance music and Riveros’ melodic instinct perfectly, leaving no room to doubt that, together, they’re dynamite.

Culture and rebellion are at the center of this experimental piece, which revolves around the figure of the black anti-slavery advocate Sebastian Lemba Calembo. Poétique Électronique is a clever group: they have a good band name, they know what they want to do and they know how to do it. Their musical approach stands out from the crowd as they realise when to pause and when to push. Irregular Heartbeat is a fine example of the current penchant in electronic music for soft vocals and punchy bass. Taken from their debut album Lead Kindly Light, Solar has everything The Violet Roadkills need to make a good first impression. The four-piece hail from Dublin and use electronics and instruments to take vintage concepts in a fresh direction, resulting in songs that are simultaneously geeky and cool. Solar’s assertive, warm bassline and beat build up to spangles of synths that sound like small studio commissions for 70s television shows. When the outer drift subsides, the beaming krautrock core of Solar begins to blast out, reaching a blisteringly heated finish.

There are plenty of people religiously devoted in northern Mexico, even the drug dealers have their own sacred figure there. Santos come from that cultural background, belonging to the ‘ruidoson’ musical scene of Tijuana. Santos is the brainchild of two brothers who have embodied their faith, but their faith comes from their lust and it is well printed in this new single. La Cosita has a very intense carnal desire and highly erotic resounding kettle drums.

A gang of best friends from small towns home-recording dreampop. Much like bike-life in Holland, Nouveau Vélo has a touch of romance to it. Kite, from their new Dazed EP, could be described as upbeat melancholia, one of those songs that makes you feel nostalgic for the things that are happening right now. Possessing a chorus that catches you straight away with its blurry guitar licks and far-off vocals, Kite is a dreamy summer anthem.

Such is my love for the sweeping, elegantly crafted indie-rock of Friends In America that their previous lack of recorded material resulted in me going to desperate lengths to consume their music. One time, after taking along my dictaphone to interview the band before a gig, I kept the ‘record’ button on during their live set just so that I could play their songs at home.
J-Rock, ugggggggggh. Save for the brain-and-feet-pleasing Sakanaction…miles ahead of everyone else in Japan tagged “rock” it’s almost ridiculous…rock music in Japan seems to be trending towards some pretty shit places. One OK Rock’s boneheaded menace has proven to be a chart-topper, so brace for them to be a permanent fixture. Sekai No Owari have a few good ideas…”marching-drill percussion, cool!”…rubbed out by some bad ones…”gahhhhh everything else gross.” Man With A Mission wandered out of a theme park and I couldn’t tell you anything that makes them unique outside of wardrobe. Mr. Children are still basically the most popular thing around, and that sucks. Things don’t look promising.

So let’s get excited about anything offering promise. The Flickers have a debut album out next week…on a big-ish label…and maybe if we hope and pray (and buy) enough they can one day get elevated to a position where they are everywhere like all the schmucks mentioned above. New single “Love Destruction” highlights everything about this trio that has intrigued Make Believe Melodies since they appeared two years ago. It’s a driving number where the music is mostly locked in. All of the drama rests in the vocals…they start out subdued, jogging alongside the music, but pick up as the song barrels ahead. “Love Destruction” offers more sonic intrigue than their previous numbers – see the squelching effect popping up during the homestretch, adding a layer of cacophony to the song. It’s equal parts catchy and thrilling…with a dash of experimentalism…that modern J-Rock needs so badly. Hope, indeed, flickers on.

Dude releases tons of new material all the time but…I don’t remember Osaka’s Soleil Soleil sounding this crisp before. “Sun” sounds clearer than most of songs this producer has made before, the synths shimmering and the percussion clanking clearly, to the point that this actually sounds a lot like neighbor-to-the-north Madegg. It’s a bit more playful, though – see the rubber-band of a synth line bouncing through the middle of the song, or the disjointed vocals that dash through the track at times. The whole song sounds fun loving and a little drunk on electronics – check the way some sounds just sort of stumble in and out of the song later in “Sun” – and it all comes across very clearly.
A little over halfway through Annie The Clumsy’s Vol. 1 collection, the singer plays a lovely little number about being with a lover, a lover who just overwhelms our protagonist with presumed swagger. Then, the proverbial shank to our thighs – “everything you do/makes my uterus ache/not my heart but my uterus ache.”

Everything about that explains the appeal of Annie The Clumsy, who first popped up on that latest Ano(t)raks comp, but also has a collection all her own. Part of it is her voice – the way she pronounces “uterus,” oh man. But the real intrigue here is how she subverts a sort of music that tends to get stupidly cheesy with sex. Her music is very bare bones, just her voice and (usually) ukulele, a combination that can get super cloying and cute in the wrong hands. Real talk, I’m writing this blurb in a Starbucks, and most of the songs playing here now highlight the lameness of the style, all cutesy-poo strumming mixed with Hallmark-grade sentiments. Annie The Clumsy, though, slyly focuses on sex, which makes for way more interesting stuff than typical love-letter material. “You Make My Uterus Ache” is pretty obvious, but following track “For God’s Sake” ups the stakes by being completely about how…uhhh…moist the central character gets thinking about a special someone (it plays like really awkward flirting, which maybe explains the “clumsy”). “Can I Sleep Over Tonight?” is pretty self-explanatory…but features banjo, which is a neat touch. Although not all the songs are about carnal pleasures – “Blemished Banana” may not actually be a double entendre, but rather about an actual blemished banana – the raunchier lyrics make these songs (which also sound really good) all the more interesting. Get it here, or listen below.

When someone wonders “what the song of the summer” is going to be, what comes to mind? That’s usually code for wondering what’s going to be the most popular single of the season, what one will hear blaring from passing cars and at outdoor BBQs. It’s gonna be energetic and upbeat. And those are all fantastic qualities – summer is all about having a big ol’ good time, and it deserves a big ol’ killer song to go with.

Still, Nagoya duo Lullaton have probably gone and made the summer album of the year, if you consider putting the warmer months under a microscope worthy of that title. Summer Songs – see, look at the title! – does what every Lullatone album ever has done, which is zero in on small details of something and celebrate the simplest parts of life with cute, let’s-skip-down-the-road-together music. Song titles include “Hot Sand,” “Grocery Shopping For A BBQ,” “Secretly Loving The Smell Of Suntan Oil” and “Splitting A Banana Split” – all instances that wouldn’t define a summer, but still make up the fabric of those sweat-soaked days. Accordingly, Lullatone’s music here doesn’t try to be big, but rather simple and fun. Opener “Cannonball Splash” serves as bit of an about-face for the duo – it prominently features surf-rock guitar, and subsequently a fuzzier edge to a group that, as of late, has been playroom-clean. It’s great. Save for the hyper-cute “Splitting A Banana Split” – all doo-wop stylings about eating ice cream and sharing said treats, geez stupidly adorable – these tracks are instrument-focused memories. “Hot Sand” is a bunch of toy instruments lizard-skipping in a way that would make Shugo Tokumaru proud, while “Driving Home With A Towel On The Sweet” swelters. Oh heck, back to the cuddly stuff – the final track, “Still Feeling The Waves When You Go To Bed” features water sounds, birds and Yoshiko Tomida (Lullatone member Yoshimi Seymour’s mother) providing very faint singing. Lullatone are an outfit that long ago figured out what they were all about – capturing teeny tiny moments sonically – and Summer Songs is another strong collection of tunes from the two. It won’t be blasting out of stereos, but it’s as summery as it gets. Get it here or listen below.
