Listen To White Wear’s Black Strings Now
Bits and pieces from this, CUZ ME PAIN project White Wear’s debut album, have been popping up over the last few months. Yet the final product, Black Strings, has been only available in stores in Japan since its release. Now, though, White Wear has uploaded the whole thing to SoundCloud so everyone can enjoy the…
Music Alliance Pact May 2013
The May edition of MAP is here, and Make Believe Melodies decided to highlight one of the more intriguing artists operating out of Tokyo to surface in 2013. Yep, Shibuya’s Metoronori, who has released two great albums of heady, bedroom-assembled pop music. Also, welcome Drowned In Sound to the MAP team! Click the play button…
Rough Tide: Atlanta Girl’s “South Carolina”
Atlanta Girl emerges from the ashes of the band Colorado Coronado, a duo who didn’t release much music during their time together but what did trickle out was pretty absorbing. Their one release Far Away, on netlabel Canata Records, showcases a group who takes their time playing with an idea, clearly influenced by the slow-building…
New White Wear: “Honkadori”
When talking about anything White Wear…or, honestly, anything that has emerged from the CUZ ME PAIN label over the past few years, from Jesse Ruins to The Beauty…does, I tend to include the word “unsettling.” That’s a trait he’s really good at conveying in his music, and has made the two EPs released under the…
Out Of Step: FOODMAN’s Iroiro
As of late, websites Tiny Mix Tapes and the Fader have been making a big deal about Japanese juke and footwork music. Both have profiled Japanese artists operating withing that scene, Tiny Mix Tapes going as far as to review a Paisley Parks’ album. One name that comes up sometimes is FOODMAN,who has been one…
No More Summer: Shtreimels’ “Yacht”
OK, here’s the song to officially soundtrack the definite end of summer 2013, courtesy of Fukuoka outfit Shtreimels (who do not put much information about themselves online). “Yacht” is a downcast guitar number that certainly takes cues from New Jersey outfits like Real Estate and (especially) Ducktails, full of reverb and with lazily unfolding vocals…
New Cuushe Music Video: “Do You Know The Way To Sleep”
Flau’s Cuushe has a new video for her song “Do You Know The Way To Sleep” off of this year’s Girl You Know That I Am Here But The Dream, and it matches up well with the slow-motion feel of the song. The clip slows down found footage of ballerinas to emphasize the beauty and weirdness (that neck on the one dancer jutting out) of their movements. Watch above.

New Ghostlight: “Kamen”
Look, I’ve been sitting in Houston’s lame-as-hell airport for six hours now waiting for a flight, and things were getting kinda rough mentally for a bit. But this new song from Ghostlight…it is bouncy and hooky and made me feel better. For now, that’s all I need to say. Listen above.
New Mitsume: “Objet”
I talked to Mitsume for The Japan Times this week in regards to their very nice new album A Long Day, and now they’ve gone and shared another new song from the full-length (out today). “Objet” is one of the sparser songs from the album, the band making the most of space (nothing makes a…
Especia Meet Negicco: Negipecia’s “Girl’s Life”
It isn’t necessarily made clear here, but if you follow Make Believe Melodies on Twitter or on Tumblr, you’ll pick up on the fact that J-pop idols are responsible (or, at least represent) for some great music. This outlet…which, in theory, focuses more on the independent/not-mainstream side of Japanese music except, uhhh, when it doesn’t…hasn’t…
New Yasutaka Nakata Featuring Charli XCX And Kyary Pamyu Pamyu: “Crazy Crazy”
1. January isn’t even over, and Yasutaka Nakata has been involved with four noteworthy singles, each one offering a different view of where he’s at in 2017. If he can sneak a Capsule number in, we’d have a total round-up. “Harajuku Iyahoi” came first, followed soon after by Perfume’s “Tokyo Girl” and Natsume Mito’s “Puzzle.”…
Stay Warm And Wobbly With AR30’s Winter Compilation 2018, Featuring Yuichi Nagao, Riemellowjunk And More
Collective AR30 always finds a way to put together seasonal compilations that end up being suitable for their respective months — or at least make said period of time a touch more enjoyable. Winter Compilation 2018 gives this cold stretch of the year a nice, woozy soundtrack with enough action to keep bodies warm. Yuichi…
Listen to Acidclank’s Inner
Usually, when I hear an album I like, I’ll post something here, even if I end up writing about it at another publication. Due to timing, though, I didn’t blog about shoegazey act Acidcalnk’s wonderful new album Inner around these parts, waiting instead to get a proper review up over at The Japan Times. But…
