Make Believe Mix For April 2012 Featuring Cloudy Busey, BOYISH and White Scooper

Indie-pop ended up being the flavor of the April, from the C86 tape Moscow Club presented to the world to an endless parade of twee-leaning bands popping up on SoundCloud. This month’s Make Believe Mix represents this trend and, like the Moscow Club mix, attempts to expand the definition of indie-pop beyond jangly guitars. Which we’ve got plenty of, don’t worry – BOYISH, Wallflower and Lilacs give us traditional indie-pop from Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya respectively. Yet Cloudy Busey takes the spirit of indie-pop and embeds it into a dance track, one more influenced by Stardust than Sea Urchins. Shortcake Collage Tape turn twee inwards on “Polaroid Full Of Kisses” while White Scooper…OK, White Scooper isn’t indie-pop, their “Winter Hawk” closing the mix out with some angular dance-rock.

Below is a list of artists and songs appearing in this month’s mix, in chronological order. Click the links to read more about them and find out how to buy/get their music. All artists featured gave me permission to include their music in this mix.

White Scooper Prep New Album Dazzle, By “Prep” I Mean Release The Whole Thing On YouTube

Remember when MP3s were going to be the death of the music industry, and labels had to stop at nothing to get illegal tracks off of the Internet? The dirty secret of those glory days was that YouTube was way, way worse – while The Web Sheriff zeroed in on blogs, most kids were just going on YouTube where people have uploaded entire albums to listen to new and old music alike. I guess since people couldn’t obtain a file of a YouTube video…though you could if you were smart!…industry insiders weren’t worried. Which was sorta dumb but hey, more tracks online for us!

Tokyo’s White Scooper would have been musical rebels if they had done what they’ve done for their new album Dazzle like five years ago – physical copies aren’t out until next week, but the group went ahead and put the entire thing on YouTube. Check out their YouTube profile for all eight tracks. Maybe not the most tip-top quality, but it is a chance to hear White Scooper’s electro-touched rock jams which are focused enough to be more than just party filler but loose enough to not be Battles-like squat drills. Early highlights – “Winter Hawk” and “Mind Stretcher.” Take some time out from watching old episodes of Full House and spend a little time with this one tonight.

New White Scooper: “Matrix” (Demo)

Didn’t White Scooper hear, Inception’s the new Sci-Fi buzz film! Bah-duh deeesh! Sorry, I’ll show myself out, but not before writing a little about this demo. Various vocal samples that sound like they were taken from news broadcasts sit at the center of “Matrix,” some unknown lady talking about “Matrix films” while also mentioning murder in America and words in Tokyo. This isn’t just CNN with a beat though…the band appears a few times and the way these chopped voices get sequenced ends up being surprisingly hypnotic. Listen to the demo here.

White Scooper, Nu Clear Classmate Remix Nu Clear Classmate

Nu Clear Classmate EP Lick The Star is out now, and possibly to celebrate this two remixes of tracks off that album are available online. Good On The Dancefloor pals White Scooper tackle “Causeless Pain” and spoon out the darkness of the original. In it’s place…something resembling minimal techno which casts the once paranoid track into a much more upbeat light. They even work a good-time guitar into the middle of it all. Listen to that take here. Elsewhere, Nu Clear Classmate themselves redo “I Know I Know.” Once again, the shadowy edge of the original song gets cast away for something a bit more light. On this version of “I Know I Know,” some sentimental keyboards and bits of strings give the song a more airy atmosphere…but still manages to hold onto the insecure vibe of the original. Take a listen….here.

Double Yr Pleasure: The PEGASUSS Remix HNC, White Scooper Get A Rework

Two great remixes for you – the first courtesy of The PEGASUSS, who has been on a tear as of late. This time out he takes a song by HNC (whose new album, Cult, comes out Dec. 2 i.e. tomorrow) and glazes it in neon. Which song, you ask? I’m not sure…The PEGASUSS removes the vocals, save for some far-off noises, and lets the rest of the track just glide along. Check it out at his MySpace.

Meanwhile, rock-shakers Whie Scooper have remixed…White Scooper. They’ve reworked their cowbell-heavy song “Jr.” and transformed it into a stuttering electro beast on “Jr. (White Scooper ‘Sin Tate’ Remix).” Where can you find it? You guessed it…MySpace.
