New 99Letters: “Bahamut”

Hard-hitting Osaka producer 99Letters has been releasing pounding new numbers at a steady clip over November over at his Bandcamp page, running from somewhat misty to bludgeoning. “Bahamut” leans towards the latter, and actually increases the intensity — impressive for an artist who turned Game Boy blips into slabs of concrete. The beats hit extra hard (and sound extra dense, for that matter), while the vocal clips lurking deep underneath sound menacing. Listen below, or get it here.

Hoshina Anniversary returns with a new remix, this one not of the Gaga variety. This time he’s taking on Tsume’s “Autobahn” – listen to the plenty-good original here. He makes “Autobahn” sound a bit more menacing, while retaining the sleek, aerodynamic feel the original mix touched on. Both mixes sound like I imagine the Autobahn,…

  • New Toiret Status: “#47”

Last year in Japanese music, for me at least, was defined by the experimental meaning-we-do-not-need-no-meaning-here wonder of producers such as Foodman, DJWWWW and Toiret Status. Their chaotic but delightfully dizzying exercises in exploring sounds — regardless of how out there those noises got — crystalized the most head-spinning movement in the country going, and made…

  • New Canopies And Drapes: “Marmalade Sun”

ビート、ギター、ベース、そしてTalk Talkの”I Believe In You”を彷彿とさせるシンセ。
