New FOODMAN: Are Kore

(Editor’s Note: I’m moving to a new apartment in two days, so posts might be on the briefer side. Gotta pack!)

Footwork producer FOODMAN already released one great off-the-wall album of music recently…and now he’s back with another on Hiroshima’s Dubliminal Bounce. Are Kore opens on the harsher end of the spectrum and along the way touches on chopped-and-sliced Indian sounds to straightforward R&B. And the sound of a fly spliced up into a juke beat.     関西のロックバンド、NOKIES!がデビューフルアルバム、”Between The Blinks”をFlake Recordsとタワーレコードからリリースしました。Los Campesinos!のようなインディーポップが特徴的な彼等でしたが、今作品では良い意味で幅広い層から好かれそうな雰囲気。タワーレコードからのリリースも違和感なく、これからバンドはどんどんメインストリームなロックバンドとして成長していきそうですが、ボーカルのクメユウスケはそのような方向性とは違ったものをYouth Genius(Youth LagoonとPerfume Geniusの融合みたいな感じかな？）として表現しています。 Soundcloudには、”All of the songs is inspired by peculiar atomosphere created by the streets and youth of Kyoto city,”(京都の若者やストリートが持つ独特な空気感が楽曲に影響を与えている。)と書かれているのですが、その通り京都の若者達は個性的なスタイルを表現していて、Youth Lagoonは少しばかりのエレクトロ要素を持つインディーポップと、跳ねるようなファンクを融合していて、哀愁とワイルドさのバランスを上手く保っています。”Explains”は直球勝負なインディーポップで、センターに配置されたキーボードがとても良い存在感。”Behind You”と”Stay Above The Clouds”は多くの打ち込みが使われていて、今年に国内でリリースされたインディーポップの中でも特に目立っています。そして”We Keep Kissing”はクラブ的アノラックサウンドが、The Brixton Academyが本気を出してダンサブルな楽曲を作ったかのような印象。Youth Geniusみたいなプロジェクトがあることで、NOKIES!の方向性もどんどん進化していきそうですね。

The song finds Yasutaka Nakata channeling traditional Japanese sounds and melodies into the song…appropriate given the subject matter focuses on being in love with a ninja….

  • Post Modern Team And Twangy Twangy Team Up For EP, Where The Action Is

    このEPは日本インディー・ポップ界のとても強力なタッグから生まれています。”Heartbreak”や”Never Let You Down”等、2012年度最高峰ともいえる曲をリリースした大阪のPost Modern Teamと、元Candy EyesのDai OgasawaraによるTwangy Twangyが、Canata Records(BOYISH, Elfs In Bloom)からスプリット・EPをリリースしました。 Post Modern Teamの”She Does Something To Me”では、彼らの普段のスタイルから離れ、新しい手法を模索しているようです。Sloppy Joeに近いテイストを感じます。ザ・スミスやザ・キュアー等のインディー・ポップとも比較されそうですが、曲を通して細かいディテールが詰め込まれていますし、コーラスも決してアンセムのような物ではありません。 Twangy Twangyの曲は電子楽器とアコースティック・ギターで構築されています。つぶやくようなボーカルにもう少しヴォリュームが必要かな、とは感じますが、とても美しい曲で、暑い八月中旬にはもってこいでしょう。ダウンロードはこちらから。また、視聴は以下から。 Where The Action Is EP by Canata Records
