Osaka artist Yullippe’s music exists in shadows, her take on industrial electronic music almost always carrying an unnerving sense to it. Her latest, Balle, continues to highlight that aspect of her sound. The title track mixes a pounding beat with a seasick mix of synthesizers, while “Poly” puts an unsettling twist on tropical sounds, any dashes of light coming into the song made to feel uncomfortable. However, for all of the constriction in her songs, Yullippe’s secret weapon here is the moments when bright melodies sneak in, even for brief periods. “Balle” is mostly crushing, but when her voice floats in, she offers a nice counterbalance that adds some lightness (not to mention tension) to the song.
