Psycho Dandies: PLASTICZOOMS

Tokyo’s PLASTICZOOMS merge shoegaze pop with industrial rock with results very reminiscent of the Jesus and Mary Chain, or contemporaries The Horrors and A Place To Bury Strangers. The band’s songs are rock numbers buried under layers of surging guitars, PLASTICZOOMS both capable of letting a song lurch in all sorts of directions (“The Sonnets”) or locking the noise together for a slow burning bit of hypnotic pop (“The Shadow”). Other bands are pushing this sort of gothy distortion rock into much more interesting places (please give Primary Colours a listen), but PLASTICZOOMS do a good job of putting their own take on the psyched-out noise of so many bands in the 80s. Plus, they just released their debut mini-album this year, they’ve got plenty of time to poke around.
