So a theme has developed this week — songs about living in Tokyo. We’ve had crushing, anxious and now via Datafruits founder Firedrill’s Shimokatastrophe, jittery. The first track “Soda Joint” sets the stage well — what starts as pleasant gets interrupted by a train announcement and away we go on an at times rubbery and other times squashed set of electro-funk. You don’t really need the transportation context to fall for this one though, as it is a elastic quartet of music that — while not as outright joyous as earlier cuts — works in enough release to its frame to make the constricting moment worth it.
