Appropriately Wistful: Teenagers In Love’s “Magic”

I have been staring out a window facing a countryside neighborhood for the past six hours. It’s a wonderful view…nice weather means the sky is a perfect blue, and there is a mountain covered in trees only a few miles away…and I’d stare at it endlessly if I could, except I’m sitting here working. Niigata’s Teenagers In Love (how twee!) have offered up a very good slice of indie-pop to soundtrack this view with “Magic.” It’s a no-hurry affair anchored by guitars and sweetened with keyboard droplets. It sounds good to doze off to, but its real strength comes from the vocals, which deliver a wistful drama to it all. The rest sounds good too. Listen above.

  • Cosmic Home: “まばたき”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4JI5f7nWQg&hl=en_US&fs=1&] Cosmic Home solely shine because of their singing. It isn’t that the duo lack good beats or a great music video – the rinky-dink electronics do their job despite sounding a bit too Wii start-up menu, and the five-minute clip certainly charms. Yet those two elements of “まばたき” pail in comparison to Cosmic Home’s…

  • New OKLobby: Resort

[youtube=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws8SKpjvq2A”] This one requires context. Maia Hirasawa, the Swedish singer who also spends extended periods of time in Japan, has become pretty darn popular in this country. Her single “It Doesn’t Stop” pops up on all sorts of radio stations…indie-approved and the sort of easy-listening stuff middle-aged people love to listen to during car pools…and…

  • Lives Up To The Name: Yogen Hayama’s Simplicity

Information on Yogen Hayama is scarce, but Simplicity offers up maybe everything one needs to know about the artist. It is, indeed, simple — five songs featuring nearly zero words, constructed from guitar and electronics. This sparse arsenal forces Hayama to get the most out of everything, and the songs on Simplicity deliver straightforward energy….
