Eyes Up: Kiddish’s “Romancer”

It’s important to take a breather from nervy electronic music and twisty-turny J-Pop to appreciate a really solid piece of songwriting. Kiddish, the moniker adopted by Tokyo’s Sayaka Natori (also the name of a character in the film Your Name, which I saw last week, so I can make this reference), creates a laid-back but hooky song with “Romancer,” a number propelled forward by piano and her voice. It’s the sound of an artist getting a lot out of a limited set of instruments, but making every detail count, whether it is the boogie-worthy breakdown or the way her husky voice mutates over the course of the song. Listen above.
