Mikeneko Homeless Teams Up With Lulu For “Watermelon”

I’m mainly used to Mikeneko Homeless singing about soba and asking for money, so forgive me for taking a second to catch up to them providing the production for a grooving, sentimental number. “Watermelon” finds them working with singer Lulu for a laid-back song, one tagged as “future sentimental” which is a nice little idea. Despite the implication of looking forward, though, “Watermelon” is pretty short on techno-flair and instead zeroes in on Lulu’s voice, Mikeneko Homeless conjuring up a pretty slight backdrop for her. They juice it up with times — matching the mood — but here’s some simple sweet emotion. Listen above.

There’s something thrilling about an artist just being entranced by specific sounds, and then seeing what they construct with them. For the past three-so years, I’ve mostly been drawn to the experimental side of this fancy — Foodman, Wasabi Tapes, Taquwami, etc. Yet this feeling manifests itself frequently in the more traditional dance community too,…

First, a site tease: expect a mini-review of Baroque’s debut EP Waste Your Time very soon. Thought, to offer up a quick summary sans flowery metaphors, it’s pretty great. • New Crunch: “Mori No Naka”
