New Chocoholic: “Love Cuts”

We can always count on Chocoholic for some high-energy dance tunes and “Love Cuts” certainly delivers on that front. It’s a bouncy bit of pop anchored by a sample noting that “love cuts like a plastic knife,” before a rap verse shoots up and the beat starts getting a bit shiftier. It’s a solid bit of energy…but it really gets interesting when everything stops for a bit, and “Love Cuts” slows down as it approaches the end. It’s a hint of detail future songs could very well have, giving otherwise solid bangers a bit more depth. Listen above.

    New Sakanaction: “Shin Takara Jima”

    1. Sakanaction’s music-video game remains near the top level of contemporary Japanese music, goodness gracious the bubble-era beauty of this. 2. It isn’t like Sakanaction went anywhere, but 2015 felt more like a celebration of the band’s rise up the rungs of the Japanese rock scene than…well, a glimpse of whatever was next. Mainly, the…

  • New Mom: “Kiss”

Saitama artist Mom has been all over the place this year, and thank goodness for that — this genre-skipping approach has resulted in one fantastic album and some delirious loosies. Latest number “Kiss” could best be seen as their most straightforward tune yet, a breezy pop number about enjoying the small things (with a slight…

  • New Canopies And Drapes: “Marmalade Sun”

ビート、ギター、ベース、そしてTalk Talkの”I Believe In You”を彷彿とさせるシンセ。
