New Friendly Hearts Of Japan: “Zeitaku”

Osaka’s Friendly Hearts Of Japan have been quiet for a while, but now they have a new album out this week and “Zeitaku,” a new track and video in advance of their full-length. And just in time, because I needed a laid-back song to soundtrack my lazy weekend, where simply not having anything (that) pressing to do and opening a window seem like paradise. “Zeittaku” is simple, but sometimes those are just what you need. Watch above.

Powaramiu fits a lot into her song “Doki Doki, Uirusu / Syourui Awaremi No Rei.” It’s backed primarily by 8-bit notes, mostly bouncy but sometimes bubbling over. Yet this isn’t nostalgia for ’80s arcade games…those familiar electronic sounds grind up against touches of modern-day dance music, while Powaramiu’s vocals come through clearly, no electronic masking…

Japanese music is in a weird place right now. “Japanese music” is pretty vague…that really refers more to the mainstream, or whatever can be sold inside a Tower Records…but there really isn’t anything going on right now, at least nothing new. • New OKLobby: Resort

  • Neko!: “Skateshoes”

Most of the music why-are-you-shouting-at-me-band Neko! make sounds crisp, cleanly recorded punk-pop full of heads-down chugging and throaty shouting. Nothing that will make you dive for the “stop” button, but also not going to inspire any essays anytime soon. Yet on the 2011 song “Skateshoes,” Neko! pull out slightly shittier recording devices and unplug their…
