New Hiroyuki Tanaka: “Just Praise Your Inner Child” And “I Have A Pen”

Plenty to be thankful for today (though in Tokyo, it only feels like a holiday…probably should get on all this work…), but for now we’ll take the arrival of two new songs from hazy house maker Hiroyuki Tanaka. “Just Praise Your Inner Child” is the sweeter, more sun-dappled of the pair, a twinkling number featuring samples of kids lurking beneath the faded beat. Listen to that one above. “I Have A Pen,” meanwhile…well, it isn’t entirely referential of that other song, though a few sonic elements from the noted viral hit sneak in (can you find them???). But for the most part, it is a longing slow-burner. Listen below.

Initially, this sounds like a weird mix. Lo-fi beach pop outfit Friends tackling American punk rockers The Suicide Machines? Could this just be a weird tribute to Jack Kevorkian? Think about it, though, and it makes sense – despite the analog fuzz, Friends has always been about pop pleasure. And “Leap Of Faith” might be…

  • New Metoronori: Poolscape

Metoronori has become a master at making melodies and rhythms emerge from seeming chaos. She’s been displaying this for years, though the Tokyo artist achieved it better than ever on her latest album released earlier in 2016, discombobulated beats and electronic spores interlocking together to create an intimate, other-world pop. Her latest release, Poolscape, features…

  • New 99 Letters: “Hey! Satan, Play Game Of Life?”

Osaka Game Boy wizard 99 Letters has put a sample of his debut single “Hey! Satan, Play Game Of Life?” His signature sound – chiptune chaos mashed up against against heavy cacophony – remains, but the clip hints at some downright upbeat stuff. Sounds good right now. • New House Of Tapes: Trip Science
