New Idiot Pop: “Nothing To Be Afraid Of”

Children singing is, in and of itself, isn’t a scary occurrence. It can actually be cute or touching or, in the case of The Langley Schools Project, sorta beautiful. Yet Idiot Pop has a knack for turning happy noises into something creepy, as evidenced on last year’s Requiem For A Dream-featuring video for the Euro candy pop jam “You’ve Got Lost.” “Nothing To Be Afraid Of” hinges on a vocal sample of children singing the titular line – sounding like they were ripped from the stage production of Newsies – but the looped schoolyard singing starts resembling something sinister with each repetition. The music isn’t particularly threatening, but it all comes back to those damn kids, almost taunting you as the song progresses. Listen below.
