New Talking City 1994: “Love Won’t Let Me Wait”

Talking City 1994 is one of the Japanese bands having a really good 2013. After being quiet for more than two quarters of 2012, the Osaka band has come back strong, releasing a strong three-song EP and several great stand-alone tracks. They’ve come along way since when they first popped up, developing a more polished sound. New song “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” sees yet another development in the group’s sound. Strangely enough, “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” sounds more sample based than band based, as it sounds like the group has just flipped an old song, the vocals fast forwarded. Whatever the source, the song is a funky bit of music that emphasizes the dancier side of the group. Listen below.

    日本のインディー・ポップ界は今年も素晴らしい曲を多く生み出しているのは確かですが、男性アーティストが大半を占めているというのが気がかりです。女性メンバーのいるバンドも多いのですが、彼女達は中心的な存在とは言いがたいでしょう。大阪のTwinkle Twinklesを除けば、女性のみのバンドというのもレアでしょう。私の記憶が正しければ、数ヶ月前にリリースされたC86のテープでさえ、多くの新しいアーティストをフィーチャーしていたのにも関わらず、女性メンバーのいるバンドはSlow Maricoのみでした。いったいPuffyshoesは何処へ行ってしまったのか？ でも最近結成したJolie Joliはtwee的な可愛げのあるインディー・ポップを奏でています。現在女性二人でドラマーを探しているみたいなのですが、タイガー・トラップ、ヘブンリーやカブといった90年初期の北米インディー・ポップ、それも女性メンバーのみのグループから濃く影響を受けています。Jolie Joliはまだ持ち曲が少ないものの、”Dreaming Girl”を聞くと、秘められた大きな可能性を感じます。シンプルな曲は明るく楽しいギターやドラムをフィーチャーし、その上で遊ぶボーカルとコーラスがとても可愛らしく、このような女性メインのバンドが増えるといいな、と思わされます。視聴は以下から。

    ネットレーベルのMaltine Recordsはもともと結構J-Pop推し。でも今年はJ-Popから影響を受けている作品だけではなく、もっと正統にポップを追求した作品を幾つかリリースしています。Avec AvecのEP、”おしえて“もそうですし、東京女子流のリミックス集なんかもあります。で、今回のFazerockのMaltineからのEPもそう。この、”あの星にのせて”では、普段の作風よりも大人しく、ウォブルベースやドロップも控えられてます。Reddam(今回はボーカルで参加。Reddam自身のリリースもオススメですよ）とのコラボ作品なので納得ですし、互いのスタイルが上手く調和しているかなと。でもMaltineにはポップに特化してほしくなくて…その時々の潜んだ才能を持つアーティストをプッシュしていて欲しいのが正直な意見なのですが…今回のようなリリースも勿論面白いですよね。ダウンロードはこちらから。
