New There Is A Fox: Sleep Well

Sleep Well is a fragile collection, the sort of song cycle built on small details from seemingly uneventful occurrences (“Raincoat,” “Morning Clouds,” “Sunday”) but finding beauty in it all regardless of how insignificant it seems. This is how There Is A Fox, based in Kyoto and one of the minds behind Dear Ear Records out of that city, has operated for the most part, and his latest on Tanukineiri Records continues in that fine tradition. The music gets slightly shimmery and There Is A Fox sings closely to the ear, creating an intimate atmosphere. “Sunday” mixes in the sound of rain falling over dreamy synth surges, adding a touch of reality to what sounds otherwise like a midday fantasy. All five songs here strike the right balance between mental escape and visions of the world around them. Get it here.

  • Norihito Ogawa Remixes Skrillex’s “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites”

The only thing I know about Skrillex is that he teamed up with Korn to release a dubstep song and that said track is as absolutely as dreadful as you’d expect from a Korn dubstep-laced song. So I’ve never listened to his “Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites” song before now, and overall it comes off…

  • New Cemetery: Denial

Denial surrounds and unnerves. The first album from the Tokyo-based project of Cemetery…the solo outing of Batman Winks’ member Kota Watanabe…loads up on spoken-word samples in all sorts of tongues and layers on the thick synthesizer lines to create a collection following somewhere between Jesse Ruins and a puddle of wet cement. Sometimes, a clear…

“Last Romance” marks a bit of a throwback for idol unit Tokyo Girls’ Style…even if the marketing materials accompanying it try to tap into current trends. • New OKLobby: Resort
