New Tofubeats: “Time Thieves”

Kobe-based producer Tofubeats says he’s working on a new album, which is very good news for us. While he’s finishing the final touches on that full-length, he’s given the world a preview from it in the form of “Time Thieves,” a fast-paced track from one of the best music makers going in Japan right now. The song mixes skittering electronics, warped vocals and, true to Tofubeats’ style, hip-hop touches like the voices shouting “hey!” in the background at various parts. Listen below.

    次の月曜日、渋谷のWombでOut Of Dotsというイベントが開催されます。三回建てのクラブを埋め尽くすべく、近未来的なサウンドを放つ多くのエレクトロ・アーティストが参加予定です。参加アーティスト達のコンピレーションもアップされているのですが、なんせ２６曲もあり、全て聴くのは凄く時間が必要。もし週末お時間のある方は、是非聴いてみてほしいです。忙しい方には１６曲以降を聴く事をオススメします。Maltine RecordsのSilvanian Familiesによる”Families Walks”はとても爽やかで、Seihoの新曲、”Blue Elegant”がそれに続きます。ここでFazerockのミニマルなポスト・ダブステップが流れ、Submerse、Madeggと続きます。でも勿論他にもハイライトがあって、例えばDub-Russelの”Nagwares 2 Me”なんかは彼等らしい飛び跳ねるサウンドになっていて、Fugenn & The White Elephantsの”Thunder”も、それを追いかけるような速いペースで進みます。追加で少しハイライトさせて頂くと、Acerola Beach、Himuro YoshiteruとQuarta 330がオススメ。視聴はこちらから。

    日本のインディー・ポップ界は今年も素晴らしい曲を多く生み出しているのは確かですが、男性アーティストが大半を占めているというのが気がかりです。女性メンバーのいるバンドも多いのですが、彼女達は中心的な存在とは言いがたいでしょう。大阪のTwinkle Twinklesを除けば、女性のみのバンドというのもレアでしょう。私の記憶が正しければ、数ヶ月前にリリースされたC86のテープでさえ、多くの新しいアーティストをフィーチャーしていたのにも関わらず、女性メンバーのいるバンドはSlow Maricoのみでした。いったいPuffyshoesは何処へ行ってしまったのか？ でも最近結成したJolie Joliはtwee的な可愛げのあるインディー・ポップを奏でています。現在女性二人でドラマーを探しているみたいなのですが、タイガー・トラップ、ヘブンリーやカブといった90年初期の北米インディー・ポップ、それも女性メンバーのみのグループから濃く影響を受けています。Jolie Joliはまだ持ち曲が少ないものの、”Dreaming Girl”を聞くと、秘められた大きな可能性を感じます。シンプルな曲は明るく楽しいギターやドラムをフィーチャーし、その上で遊ぶボーカルとコーラスがとても可愛らしく、このような女性メインのバンドが増えるといいな、と思わされます。視聴は以下から。
