Quinka, With A Yawn Bossa-s The Classics…and James Blunt

Quinka, With A Yawn released a great album last year called Su. Now she brings the world a follow-up…and it’s a collection of cover songs done in bossa-nova style. Seriously. The simply titled Afternoon Bossa finds Michiko Aoki re-imagining 10 songs into Brazilian-tinged numbers. Look forward to hearing Oasis (“Whatever”), Coldplay (“Viva La Vida”) and the requisite Beatle’s track (“Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”) be transformed. Quinka’s released a short preview video sharing samples of each song. Initial impressions: jury’s still out on her “You’re Beautiful,” but her version of Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” sounds twee-tastic. Plus, she does a mean take on The La’s “There She Goes,” which I think every Japanese indie-pop band has to cover at some point in their career. Listen to some samples below.
