New Madegg: “Parasol” Plus New EP Players

The ever-prolific Kyoto space-brain Madegg’s latest number, “Parasol,” comes off as more straightforward than some of his other recent material. It still contains the Brainfeeder-leaning spaciness that should get Flying Lotus to make the dude official Japanese resident for the label, but it’s not quite as wormhole-ready, something a bit simpler to understand. “Parasol” is mostly just some kitchen-counter beats…by which I mean, this sounds like something he recorded on a literal kitchen sink…with some electronic stardust sprinkled over that. According to SoundCloud, he also has a new EP, Players, out now on Bunkai-kei Records. Listen here.

New Madegg: “Mono U Ni”

Was literally brushing my teeth when I noticed that Kyoto’s Madegg posted a new track called “Mono U Ni” to his SoundCloud page. Take a listen to this spacey…as in minimalist, not constellations…track below while I wash my face.

Madegg Embraces Some Lowercase Letters, Also Releases New EP

It’s great that an artist can just throw recently completed tracks online minutes after completion and get attention for them, but still it’s nice to see actual albums and EPs pop up as well. Kyoto’s Madegg (looks like he doesn’t go all caps anymore, cool) has been posting a bunch of excellent single tracks to his SoundCloud lately, but with his just released (on Bandcamp!) EP Fade, I’m happy to say he’s put something out that serves as a perfect starting point to his spaced-out sounds. It’s five-tracks long, albeit the one named “Makura” twitches on gorgeously for ten minutes, and captures Madegg’s Brainfeeder-inspired brain in one great place. Highlights include the click-heavy glower “Bruw” and opener “Island 1” with it’s laser-beam gurgles oozing underneath the wrench-work. Fade highlights some of the most exciting electronic music coming out of the Kansai region right now, and if you haven’t spent some time with Madegg this is early evening chat you should have. Go here to listen to it.

New MADEGG: “Telephonekings” And “Spectacular”

Forget telephones – this sounds like fax machines getting drunk and invading a bounce house. Kyoto whizz-kid MADEGG’s latest upload brings up all the same words I’ve already spat onto this WordPress page before – imagine the word “space” repeated on loop, complete with semi-creepy vocal sample. What’s slightly different here is how buzzing MADEGG’s latest whirl sounds, almost as if he pressed random machine buttons and sewed them together with Ethernet cables. The seemingly all-over-the-place sounds get dropped into just the right order, though, resulting in another interesting listen that, chiefly, also gets your body flying to every corner of your apartment. Added a couple days after I originally wrote something up about “Telephonekings,” the aptly-titled “Spectacular” continues showing off dude’s Brainfeeder feel. This one especially feels indebted to Los Angeles, the sense of time feeling slightly off just like that album’s Dilla-learned bent. MADEGG isn’t just ahead of the curve, he’s getting prolific too.

Kansai What: MADEGG

Tokyo is always going to be the central scene for all Japanese music, just because of the sheer size of that metropolis. Yet the Kansai region…the area anchored by the triple-threat of Osaka, Kyoto and Nara…has been hiding some of the most interesting electronic noises in the country today. I’m not just talking about tech-rock bands like Nuxx and √thumm, but more bedroom-oriented artists using SoundCloud and Bandcamp to share their creations with the world. The ambient-leaning Luka Uemura and the technicolor-brain-bursting of Takuma from Sugar’s Campaign were recent examples, and now Kyoto whiz-kid (dude was born in 1992!) MADEGG steps up to take us in yet another direction. If Takuma is the Warp-ready guy and Uemura the one most likely to pal around with Tim Hecker, MADEGG is Kansai’s most likely to land on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint.

Not to imply he’s blasting us off into the far reaches of electronic space…he’s more like Teebs, capable of wringing big beauty out of his synths. “Hooen Forest” comes off like a gem rainstorm, clicks and clacks raining down as MADEGG weaves his beat and other noises through, leading up to the part late where he introduces those faded synth buzzes that end up being one of the cornerstones of his style. “Hooen Forest” is just a treat to listen to, like giving a grass-fed double cheeseburger to your ears.

That one’s tasty, but “Onoki” is MADEGG’s stroke of genius. It’s a slow burner, eight minutes of clanking beats and those dusty synths going off, a hundred other little touches floating within the ether that is this song. This one creates space, and sneakily sucks you into its void. Listen below.
