The run up to Kyoto producer Madegg’s new album New continues with “National Water,” and a bare-bones but appropriate clip, which you can watch above. The young artist has always been good at working tension into his music, and he’s gotten particularly good at it over the past year, moving beyond highlighting great sounds and rather pairing them up to make for more unnerving listens. “National Water” matches drippy-droppy details with woozy synthesizer, the end result being a subtly dizzying number.
A few new songs appeared online over the weekend, from a pair of rising producers in Japan, so let’s make a little space for them, shall we?
– As mentioned before, Madegg is set to drop an album, New, in early November. He’s shared a song from that collection recently called “Dragon,” which you can hear above. It’s a rumbling and clattering number with an unnerving edge — courtesy of what sound like growls deep in the mix.
– Tofubeats, only a month after releasing the very strong Positive, has shared a new song called “Open Your Heart.” Compared to the tight electronic productions found on his newest album, “Open Your Heart” is a bit more shambling and disorienting, though a nice groove emerges at several points. Listen below.
As part of a new art gallery he is putting on, painter Kentaro Minoura has recruited three electronic artists (and, uh, himself) to make music to accompany the new exhibition. The Void EP (same name as the gallery) finds Minoura getting some pretty solid names to join in, highlighted by Kyoto’s Madegg, who made two songs (not appearing on his forthcoming album) for the EP. Opener “DFY” glides by with a bit of percussive switch ups, a soft opening for a collection that is mostly anything but, while “Fashion Week” goes for something more mysterious and natural (bird chirps, or at least something resembling them). On the other end of the spectrum is Wasabi Tapes’ Nicole Brennan, with “Scary Moments 029” and “Scary Moments 030,” two songs of HD-worthy noise, making for an intriguing chaos. We are officially back from SXSW and, more or less, recovered from the experience. Coupled with other ~big changes~, let’s try to get back on track.
Lots of new stuff incoming from Flau in the last week. Today, one of their finest artists, the dream-pop-leaning Cuushe, shared another track from her forthcoming Night Lines EP, this one titled “Daze.” Listen to it above.
A little earlier, M/D/G (Kyoto producer Madegg and his latest name), released a self-titled collection. It features some thumping, at times disorienting, cuts, a few of which we’ve written up before, but are now gathered together in one place. You can buy it here, or listen below.
