New HNC (Hazelnuts Chocolate): Cult

Love And Hates get a lot of play around these parts, but I’ve failed to mention the twee-crunk duo isn’t either members primary gig. Both have solo gigs, one of them playing as Miila and the other as HNC. The latter has a new album, Cult, out on Dec. 2 and a good number of samples from the records are available at HNC’s MySpace.

HNC and Love And Hates naturally have a few sonic similarities, chiefly both rely on big beats to move their songs forward. That and the fact Love And Hates performed a slightly different version of the cat-heavy “Kitten’s Breaks” live in Osaka back in October. HNC uses beats in a less hip-hop (and in a less joking way), opting instead to use them as a two-step background for the bouncy tropical pop on top. Highlights from the Cult samples: the Islands meets aquatic dancehall of “Moon Song,” the giddily infectious “Next M,” the hop-scotch pop of “Girl Things,” and the island shuffle of “Mango.” Oh, and all the cat sounds.

Unsolved Mysteries: Hair Cut Valentine/Hanaco Principe

Here’s a reason I love doing this blog business – it leads to personal musical discoveries I never would have made if I weren’t constantly trying to learn more about Japanese music. Latest unearthing – Hair Cut Valentine. This artist (group?) doesn’t have much of an Internet presence, just a MySpace page with a few songs and a cute drawing of a cat. But the few tracks available are absolute indie-pop delights, cute guitar-centered songs similar to what Three Berry Ice Cream makes only with a slight samba influence. Or, in the case of “NICOLA,” a cheery party influence suitable for soundtracking a spring disco picnic.

The limited information about Hair Cut Valentine might add a kind-of-cool air of mystery, but it also makes learning anything else about this act near impossible. An all Japanese MySpace page doesn’t help, either. But there is one clue, in the “friends” section.

One of Hair Cut Valentine’s MySpace pals features a similar cute cat drawing as a profile pic, one Hanaco Principe. Listen to a few of this artist’s songs and notice how the voice sounds strangely familiar. I have no definitive proof of anything, so I’ll just leave it at hmmmmmmmm. A little Google Translating reveals Hanaco Principe works out of Paris, but has Japanese origins. Hanaco Principe’s music unfolds much more slowly than Hair Cut Valentine’s, trading in bright melodies for reserved guitars, lonely singing and occasional other flourishes (check “The Bright Song”).

Have any more information about these two acts? Know how to read Japanese? Comments are down this a-way.

Duck The Halls: “Manekineko Duck No Uta” Gets Christmas Version

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMSNdSZJv9Q&hl=en_US&fs=1&]

I realize “Manekineko Duck No Uta” is nothing more than a way for an insurance company to peddle product, but that small fact isn’t going to stop me from writing even more about the left-field hit of Japan for 2009. To keep the song fresh heading into the holiday season, the folks behind this cutesy jingle went and recorded a Christmas version of the song, slowing the overall pace down and making it a bit more carol-like. Plus, the duck-cat is wearing a Santa outfit now.

To watch the video and hear the new song, head on over to the official Manekineko Duck website, which will also blow your mind away with sickening cuteness. Click on “CM” and enjoy watching a duck and cat fly a sleigh!

Love And Hates Remix Desmond & The Tutus

Love and Hates
Love and Hates

To take you into the weekend, here is a new Love And Hates remix. The Pixie Stick snorting duo work their twee-club magic on Desmond & The Tutus’ “Peter.” They take the power pop of the original and absolutely gut it, turning the track into a goofy quasi-rap joint complete with the Love And Hates calling-card of slide whistles. They even get all “Bucky Done Gun” (or Deise Tigrona, your preference) in the middle, and can’t resist joining in on the madness themselves. They have better songs in their cute arsenal, but this is a triumph of remixing, just completely transforming the original. Listen at MySpace, and have a pleasant weekend.

Turns Out I’m Not Crazy: Live Performance Of “Manekineko Duck No Uta”

Told you this was getting popular – the Afflac jingle “Manekineko Duck No Uta” has gone from 30-second spot to twee-tastic music video to an actual live experience. Japan Probe has got the video.

Most startling of all is this performance seems to be happening on Music Station, probably the biggest weekly music show on in Japan (and also a show I keep meaning to live blog for this here site, but always find myself going out on Friday night instead). Mariah Carey just performed on this show, and now they’ve got this. Really, the only thing you can say about this tiny phenomenon is it just keeps getting cuter (peep the flu mask the kid is sporting). Also, this song is probably better than 50 percent of the stuff Music Station usually features.

Want to meet that duck-cat so bad.
