Still playing catch up on stuff that popped up during our winter vacation. SparkPlugged wrote about Cinema Staff’s “GATE” a couple weeks ago and pretty much summed up whatever I would have written in the first place. They do in fact sound very similar to Sunny Day Real Estate – maybe a little more melodic, at least when it comes to the vocals – and “GATE” breaks out all sorts of nifty tricks. The sudden stops and various tempo changes over the course of it’s five-minute run keep the whole song continually fresh, moving it from subdued rock to more angsty heights. The conclusion – a LOT of guitar freakouts to keep it simple – especially shines. Watch below.
