New Metome: “Palm”

Osaka’s Metome has mostly drawn attention for his more woozy moments — as highlighted on the still-excellent Objet, he’s a pro at getting disparate elements together and letting them bounce off one another just right. Yet he’s long shown a side willing to stray from the tight bass slaps and half-second vocal burps, and latest song “Palm” offers a nice switch-up for anyone expecting crazier stuff. It drifts along on some foggy percussion and a snippet of a voice, the entire number minimal but shrouded in a mist that makes it all the more intriguing. Listen above.

Kenji Ishida’s electronic compositions, dubbed “ambient experimental,” can come off as a little misleading. His bulging-at-the-seams tracks contain elements of ambient music – “Dizetrapolis” opens with a chilly synth line that remains frozen in place for most of the track’s time, while “Voyagers’ shoots for the same shiny candy coat Emeralds played with at various…

  • Stuff We Missed 2012: stillsound

もうちょっと速いけど”Reminds Me Of You”もオススメです。

  • Scrambled Ecstasy: samuragosha’s “fake documentary / Wi-Fi”

The best song on tofubeat’s Fantasy Club is “This City,” a number that frequently feels close to collapsing in on itself but focuses together to create a stretch of ecstatic release. Producer samuragosha conjures up the same type of vibe on this two track release from tofubeats’ Hihatt imprint. Opener “fake documentary” mostly putters forward…

  • Woozy Pop: Fancy Books

Over the past two years, the sound pushed forward by the artists making up the CUZ ME PAIN label – a style mixing dance music with dreamy atmospherics – has become quite influential in Tokyo. • Fragile Mystery: Ropes

Japanese group Ropes exists, because I’m staring at the packaging for their “Slow/Last Day” 7″ right now, but they try their best to make you think they don’t. Flake Records provides a small biography and samples of their work, yet the trail stops there. Even the physical release reveals little, the shots of the band…
