Coming Up For Air: Shelling’s “Lake To Love”

Wow, two shoegaze-ish tracks in one week, savor this.

What makes Shelling’s “Lake To Love” stand out is that it isn’t striving to sound pretty. Though, it does have moments of beauty – the female vocals, mainly, graze over this song just right, left untouched for the most part to add a touch of loveliness to what is a loud, guitar-driven song. Shelling don’t aim on writing a fuzzed-out pop song or anything else – they let the feedback drone out, so that the lithe singing is in conflict with the noise beneath, creating a great conflict that becomes more and more captivating with each listen. • New May.e: Spangle

    1. What has been stunning about the music released by Tokyo artist May.e up until now has been her ability to turn nothing but acoustic guitar and her voice…and every once in a while, the slightest of percussion…into a hypnotic swirl. She pulled a nifty trick last year by releasing two albums, a move that…

Man, Mom is feeling themselves right now. Following the topsy-turvy, post-net-label funhouse of Baby Like A Paperdriver, the Saitama artist has gotten a little more sweet, first with the chipper “That Girl” and now “Skirt.” It’s a little lighter, powered by a stroll of a beat and some fat keyboard notes — accented by video…

  • New Metome: Palm

One of the bigger embarrassments this blog has recorded so far in 2016 was completely missing out on Osaka producer Metome’s Feather. Released via LA cassette label Postgeography, it’s a study in texture, featuring the same sudden swerves defining releases such as 2013’s triumphant Objet, but with Metome deeply interested in how every detail sounds…

  • New Kinocohotel: “もえつきたいの”

I’ve been seeing this band a lot of places recently…primarily, on MySpace banner ads and the covers of magazines. Dismissing Kinocohotel based on their fashion wouldn’t be a radical decision, seeing as this four-piece dresses up as sexy hotel workers employed at a Sgt. Pepper’s themed resort. But there newest single “もえつきたいの” actually allows one…
