Aya Gloomy — formerly just Gloomy — has been a presence in Tokyo’s indie music scene for a few years now, creating a scratched-surface dream pop that fit in lovely alongside artists such as Canopies and Drapes, and Batman Winks. Now, she’s prepping for a proper debut via Big Love Records in February, highlighted by the blurry “Drive,” which surfaced in December. The smudged parts remain, but the track backing up her voice is more electric and unsettling, a pulsing little thing that pushes the song forward. It’s sparse enough though to put the focus fully on her vocals, which criss-cross with one another to create a dizzy effect. Listen above.
