New Boys Age: Romance Planet

a3715459096_10

Despite all the tags swirling around them — psych-rock, Burger Records, Saitama — Boys Age really excel at writing laid-back rock numbers designed for staring at clouds and maybe loafing about your living room. This is the mode where they can always fall back on and come up with something solid, always made a bit stranger thanks to the less-than-orthodox vocal delivery. Romance Planet, currently streaming over at Bandcamp, is an album’s worth of sunny-day zone outs, featuring no-hurry numbers and some especially poppy touches, such as American outfit Summer Twins popping up on the chorus to “Tipsy Dance.” Even the weirder moments — long, blurry instrumentals — play out like sun beams reflecting off pool water.
