New Crunch: Simple Mind

Following a great mini-album from near the start of the year, Nagoya’s Crunch have a new three-song set up on Bandcamp that continues the momentum established on their debut release. The highlight is “Simple Mind,” a stomping indie-pop number made melancholy via some especially nice vocal backing “oooooos.” Crunch have toed this line between driving and downtrodden before, but none better than “Simple Mind,” that almost goes overboard by adding strings but avoids overdosing on them. “Holiday” moves at a more relaxed pace while still striking the same balance…and featuring some nice echo-y vocals…and is a nice comedown following the rush of “Simple Mind.” Rounding it out – a remix of the title track by Fredricson.

The Alien Pop series of releases from Snail’s House have been Keitaro Ujiie’s strongest creations to date, although it’s worth noting electro-pop numbers hit my personal taste zone way more than others. Across these releases — including this Spring’s delirious second installment — he’s hit this sweet spot between French touch, Vocaloid as imagined by…

  • Make Believe Melodies’ Favorite 2019 Japanese Albums: #50 – #41

At some point this fall, Make Believe Melodies turned ten. I’d known this decade milestone was looming — mainly because 2019 also marked my tenth anniversary of moving to Japan to work in the countryside teaching English to bored teenagers “for a year or two, tops” — and toyed around with ways to celebrate. Then life happened…

  • New Predawn: “Keep Silence”

I used to hate the telephone” という歌詞に始まり淡々と心の移り変わりを説明しています。”
