New Old Lacy Bed: “Coastlands”

“Coastlands” has been out in the wild in a different form for about a year now, but Old Lacy Bed recently posted a new video for featuring a fresh take on the darty song. You can watch the indie-pop-lifestyle clip above. Weirdly enough, “Coastlands” feels like a throwback as 2014 kicks off. Japan’s indie-pop scene is still janglin’ away, yet it seemed a lot more active back when “Coastlands” first emerged. Simply put, everything got oversaturated and the field filled up with hit-or-miss acts. Plenty of outfits that excel at this throwback sound exist, but they aren’t releasing much at the moment. “Coastlands” is a whistle-happy song that actually highlights a band that can do it well, and a reminder of the promise this sonic world contains.

    Figureというアーティストはご存知でしょうか？この日本アーティストのBandcampのページを見てみて下さい。情報量の多いサイトですよね。どうやらアメリカツアーをするみたい！…ってそれは違うFigureでしたね。同じ名前を使ったインディアナ拠点のビートメーカーがいるみたいです。でも日本のFigureも新EP、”Come Down”でもっと注目を集める事でしょう。 このEP以前のFigureはどんな感じだったかというと、Teen Runnings登場後からすでに数年間も日本のインターネットを埋め尽くしている、やかましくファズの掛かったベッドルームサウンドを奏でていました。その過去の作品達は、厳しく言えば録音のクオリティが低かったり、ノイズの実験のような作品ばかり。でも今回の”Come Down”では、そんな遊び心とフックのあるメロディーが上手く調和しています。嵐のような轟音もバランスよく効果的に感じられ、”Soft Path”なんかがその「グッドバランス」を象徴してるんじゃないかな。今まで同様、いかつい生楽器の音が大半を占めているものの、やわらかいキーボードや、ノイズをくぐって出てくるボーカルが見事（洋楽で例えるならDIIVでしょうか）。”Place”は幻想的な曲で、ギターやベースもその雰囲気を崩しません。一方で”Come Down”は逆に歪んだドラムが印象的で、キラキラしたキーボード（木琴みたいな音）が上手く混ざっています。Come Downは凄くスローな”My Side”で終わるわけなんですが、この曲はギターストローク、キーボードと淡いボーカルのみのシンプルな構成。驚くほどの成長を遂げたFigureの自信作を締めくくるにはもってこいの美しい曲です。試聴はこちらから。

    ２０１２年にインターネットで急速な成長を始めたインディーポップシーンは、男性アーティストによる男性の為のものになってしまっている。２ヶ月前のにJolie Joliを紹介させて頂いた時にそう書きました。でも１０月になった今、女性中心のバンドが多くでてきて、良いバランスになってきたと感じてます。Jolie Joli、Old Lacy Bed、The HomecomeingsやFoodie等が登場したり、Les Glass GlaceやMemory Girls等の以前から存在したバンドも活躍が目立ちます。そして新たに２組のグループ、名古屋のCRUNCHと大阪のJesus Weekendがシーンにでてきてました。 CRUNCHは新参者というわけではないようで、ツイッターを見る限りでは２０１０から活動しているようです。なぜ今になって注目したかというと、今週SoundCloudを始めて、”Simple Mind”という曲をアップロードしたからです。今のシーンに上手くなじむこの曲は、他のバンドよりもマイナー調なのが特徴的で、ギターの奏でるエコーが美しいです。試聴は以下から。 大阪のJesus Weekendは本当の意味でのニューカマー。結成したばかりのこのグループは、来月にAno(t)raksからEPをリリースする予定みたい。今聴ける音源はかなりローファイなので、レーベルのカラーに合わせてどう磨きをかけるのか、楽しみです。アコースティックギターの目立つシンプルな構成の”Puberty Bell”は、音質のクオリティの悪さも気にならないような愛らしい曲になっています。試聴は以下から。
