It takes some set of balls to name your band after Buddy Holly’s backing group, so The Crickets score points for daring from the get-go. The five-piece sounds very little like Mr. Holly’s bros though. SparkPlugged and Neaux (side tangent: that pairings the J-music blog equivalent of Nash-To-Stoudemire, totally dope) correctly pegged the sound of “Loss” as “jangling” ala R.E.M. and a cargo tanker’s worth of indie bands from the Reagan years. The Crickets do add a little bit of rockin’ muscle into the equation later in the song, not to mention the lead singer’s voice manages to recall both Michael Stipe and Dave Grohl. This track comes off of the band’s debut mini-album out May 12th.
