The latest in Kyoto producer TOYOMU’s productive 2016 output, Polygon Noise finds the young artist once again zooming off in an unexpected direction. He’s sampling again, but this time he’s seemingly mining from 8-bit sources to create a sparse, tinny five-song set (it has been a long time since I played Red or Blue, so not sure if any of these sounds hail from the original Pokemon). Save for the fizzy, busy opener “Kadobaru,” the songs leave plenty of space, which allows individual sounds to really stick with you. And all of them sound like they are seconds from crashing in on themselves, teetering on glitching but always holding together. Get it here, or listen below.
