In a little over a week’s time, Toyomu (mandatory “it is actually all caps, TOYOMU, if you want to know”) shares his debut EP, Zekkei, featuring all original material. This is kind of misleading — more like his first without using any samples, or at least samples he made himself — but the end result is a fantastic display of his beatmaking skills, rounded out by spaced-out synthesizer and samples of nature that help ground it in reality. “The Palace” offers the EPs most soaring moment, Toyomu embracing the regality implied by the title and loading the song up with synthesized horns, gong hits and an overall air of bigness. Yet on the edges, he adds woozy synth lines, giving it all a dream like feel. Listen above.
