Indie kids take note…THIS is how you do 90’s punk-pop. Though I could live without Sand Beach Surf Coaster’s Rocket Power-ish imagery – aren’t there enough songs about the beach already?…everything else drips with California punk-pop perfection. Guitars drive ahead on only a few chords, making no room for cutesy stuff. Simple but effective stuff. What makes “Private Beach” and this group stand out, though, are the vocals. Lead singer MAYU adds a pinch of sweetness to the whole affair, keeping up with the guitars but also making “Private Beach” a little less gruff. When the chorus hits and the backing “oooohs” kick in…these dudes get it.
