Simple Pleasures: NNMIE’s “Shiiteru”

Sendai’s NNMIE makes due with a small assortment of tools, but makes a charming little number in “Shiiteru” from them all. Using some breezy guitar melodies and some drum machine beats, they construct a rollicking indie-pop number apt for lazy afternoons or strolls under the sunlight. The detail that sells it — and actually gets me a little misty-eyed over the early days of like Boyish or Figure, other indie-pop projects still going but in slightly different form — is how the vocals have a slight echo on them, keeping them just out of reach and really adding some always-welcome melancholy to each line. I stumbled across Kyoto DJ/producer Handsomeboy Technique looking for remixes of Thieves Like Us’ “Drugs In My Body.” Handsomeboy (a.k.a. Yoshitaka Morino) somehow made the nocturnal strut of the original into something strangely triumphant. Check it out at his MySpace page. He has a new album of remixes available titled Discommunication Breakdown including the “Drugs”…

  • Higher Than The Stars: Belinda May’s “Everyday In Love”

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart are calling it a day! Whatever SoundCloud rapper playing around with J-pop ideas or weirdo electronic texture lover captures my attention, indie-pop is always going to be foundational for me (can’t shake those teenage years!) and this was a group hitting on that feeling even as adolescence zoomed…

[youtube=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4amBer5TNI”] Heavenstamp’s excellent single “Morning Glow” gets a proper video instead of the iTunes visualizer treatment it originally had. The new clip takes people involved in what should be everyday situation and transforms them into dancing fools who move in this really unnerving way, like they might be made out of paper. • New Taquwami: “All My Life”
