Make Believe Mix June 2012

This might be the most Kansai-centric edition of the Make Believe Mix, a nice sampler of sounds from all around Japan just in time for the summer. It starts with Tokyo’s LLLL before shifting to Osaka’s Post Modern Team. From there, we stick around in the city to listen to the recently formed Foodie and Les Glass Glace. Our stay in the region ends with Stuck In Summer’s “You,” and then it is a short train ride to Nagoya to check in on House Of Tapes. Last, we jet all the way to the western edge of the country, to check out Fukuoka’s Breezesquad and his remix of a Little Boots song.

Below is a list of artists and songs appearing in this month’s mix, in chronological order. Click the links to read more about them and find out how to buy/get their music. All artists featured gave me permission to include their music in this mix.

New Post Modern Team: “Heartbreak”

This one just plopped down over on SoundCloud – Kansai’s Post Modern Team have another catchy rush of indie-pop, this one titled “Heartbreak.” The chorus makes you think this one might be a bit more chin-raised-high…”I get over you heartbreak.” The next line, though, is “every single day,” which implies the titular feel happens way too frequently to our protagonist. The emotions might be tough to read, but the music is simple and delicious – in the same mold of the group’s first release “Never Let You Down” except taken to an even greater extreme, “Heartbreak” is one giant hook…the only sentences in this song are the two above, though the way this song unfolds you swear a lot has changed. New Post Modern Team: By The Sea EP

We’ve now reached the point where this new wave of Japanese indie-pop bands are releasing music at such a madcap rate where keeping up with it can be more challenging than actually listening to the music and getting lost in the sound. I guess this could be brushed aside by saying that it’s just indie-pop, the sort of jingle-jangle recorded and tossed out into the online ether in an afternoon. Yet that’s not fair, because a lot of the music coming out of this scene in Japan today deserves more than a cursory SoundCloud dashboard listen. Osaka’s Post Modern Team are one such act worthy of extended time, and their new By The Sea EP is a good gateway. The title track lacks the coastal catchiness of their first song “Never Let You Down,” but boasts a slightly harsher guitar sound and a structure resembling early Oasis. It’s a grower, but once it sinks its claws in, watch out. Plus, Post Modern Team throw on a nice cover of Another Sunny Day’s “Anorak City.” Spend some time with both. Go Go Indie-Pop: Post Modern Team

I’m on semi-vacation for the next two days…hooray sleeping in!…so you might only see one post per day. Yet I couldn’t kick back and pass out without mentioning a band out of Osaka named Post Modern Team, who have two lovely songs available for download this way. As is the style in that part of Japan, Post Modern Team lean towards the twee, highlighted by the hazy glide of “Never Let You Down,” one of the sweetest indie-pop numbers to emerge from Kansai in recent months (that chorus!). They also have included a cover of The Smiths’ “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.” Spend your holiday weekend (or working week) with these dudes. Get here.
