Spare Planet is a new-ish unit between producers Hayato Iwaki and Take, and their debut Chemical Girl EP finds the pair exploring a lot of sounds that have been ever prevalent online over the last few years. The title track features a slow rollercoaster-build surrounded by neon synths (think Wave Racer) and a drop. “Blossom Candy,” meanwhile, skirts between some sort of kawaii 2-step and Jersey Club banger. Yet the pair aren’t simple retreads of familiar sounds, as Spare Planet find ways to but their own stamp on these numbers — the colorful edges of both songs, or the fact “Chemical Girl’s” drop is more on the subdued side, or how “Blossom Candy’s” refusal to be just one thing makes it all the better. Listen above.
