New Akoustik Shadow: Cross Over

How do you go about establishing yourself in a music environment packed in tight? There are lots of electronic music producers scattered across Japan now, and standing out isn’t an easy task. Akoustik Shadow, on new album Cross Over, decided the best way to approach this tricky situation was…try out a bunch of different sounds. The result is an album that has its messy moments, but is overall a compelling listen, and offers hints at the best directions he might go.

Cross Over’s strongest moments are its least tangible – in particular, the first three songs here are weightless, practically drifting dreamy productions featuring a smattering of acoustic guitar. “Morning Coffee” is sweet, but more of an introduction to the bird-filled “Sanctuary,” which lingers longer into the eyes-on-the-stars “Take A Walk.” Beats become more prominent as Cross Over unfolds, sounding great on the zippy “Touch” and the sugary “Spangle,” not so great on the stab at Juke “Bootlex” (the album’s only real miss.     By Daisuke Kikuchi ファッションと音楽は常にリンクしていて、数々のユニークなスタイルを築き上げてきました。スタッズだらけのライダースを着たパンクス達だって、当然その一例なのですが…彼等はそれをアンチ・ファッションと謳っていましたね。でも逆に、バンドがファッションに強いこだわりを持っていて、なおかつ自らの曲までファッションだと宣言していても、その信念は凄くパンクだなと感じます。そんなバンドがPlasticzooms、「ジャケット・パンツ・ブーツと同じ並びに僕たちの音は在る。音を服にコーディネートして欲しい。」とは、９月にリリースされた彼等の新しいプロジェクト、Die Kusse（ディーキュセ）のコンセプトからの一文。３枚のシングル”Full Moon”、”Rubbers”と”Bye. Bye.”にはそれぞれ洋服のタグが同封されていて、かれらのファッションに対する強いこだわりを象徴しています。 Plasticzoomsのダークなメイクや真っ黒なファッションからは、ザ・キュアーやスージー・アンド・ザ・バンシーズ等、ニューウェーブ／ポスト・パンク時代のバンドへの愛が感じられます。楽曲も同様で、”Full Moon”もそのような影響を基ににし、新たな挑戦を加えた傑作と言えるでしょう。キリング・ジョークがシューゲイザーに挑戦したかのような雰囲気を持つこの曲では、シャープなギターが陰のような渦巻くバックグラウンドを切り裂き、スリリングな空気感を生み出しています。様々なドラムパターンがスロー・テンポの曲に展開を加え、飽きのこない多様性のある物にしています。複雑なリズム構成のアルペジオ・パートは必聴です。でも、他の２曲は打って変わってアップテンポ。”Rubbers”はポジティブ・パンク全開なナンバーで、”Bye. Bye.”は前作”Starbow”の収録曲、”Scent”のような、疾走感のあるバラードです。”Bye. Bye.”のシングルには現代音楽家、中村益久さんによるリミックスも収録。デジタルとアコースティックが共存した壮大なサウンドは、Plasticzoomsとは異なるタッチで手がけられていますが、異なるバックグラウンドを持つアーティストとも積極的にタッグを組む、彼等の音楽性の広さを象徴しています。トレイラーは上に、購入はFile-Under Recordsから。

    いわゆる”レイブ”という所には行った事がないので、もし誤解を招くような発言があったら申し訳ないです。イメージしているのは、日常から解き放たれ、そのトランス状態を楽しむ為のイベント。大阪のSeihoの新曲、”I Feel Rave”も、そのイメージに近いです。軽快なビートの上で、様々なトーンを行き来する複雑に調律されたボーカルが、繰り返し”I feel you”と歌い、リスナーを幻想の世界へと呼び込みます。この曲はSeihoを次のリリースへと繋げる堅固なステップと言えるでしょう。 レイブと聞いて他に思い浮かぶのは…偏見かもしれませんが、ドラッグです。Seihoは幻覚を思わせるような工夫を曲に入れていて、後半の水滴が落ちるような音の後、ボーカルは更にめちゃくちゃになっていきます。終盤にこういった工夫もいれる事で、曲のユニークさが際立っています。視聴は以下から。
