New Firedrill: Shimokatastrophe

So a theme has developed this week — songs about living in Tokyo. We’ve had crushing, anxious and now via Datafruits founder Firedrill’s Shimokatastrophe, jittery. The first track “Soda Joint” sets the stage well — what starts as pleasant gets interrupted by a train announcement and away we go on an at times rubbery and other times squashed set of electro-funk. You don’t really need the transportation context to fall for this one though, as it is a elastic quartet of music that — while not as outright joyous as earlier cuts — works in enough release to its frame to make the constricting moment worth it. Osaka-based producer Erik Luebs moves into darker territory with “Red C,” the first song from forthcoming release Wasteland. It’s a constricting number, new layers emerging gradually as “Red C’ moves from minimal to something completely enclosing, every available space seemingly taken up as the song enters its final phase. The percussion is the best detail,…

  • Glowing Corners: Sakasa’s Coin Bender EP

Let your body dance, and let your brain dance more,” と説明されるこの三曲入りEPからは、名古屋のHouse Of Tapesとも共通点を感じます。

In theory, this shouldn’t be noteworthy – Japanese producer takes track from British pop star, replaces the club-friendly elements with 8-bit noises while keeping the sticky sweet chorus intact. That’s what Fukuoka’s Breezesquad did with Little Boots’ “Shake,” removing nearly everything from the original save for the vocal track, and sticking that inside an NES….
