New Ollygon And Hercelot Featuring Cori!s: Okosama Paradise

Look, I’m not going to pretend blogging about music at a deeply weird moment like this is worthwhile, and right now I don’t think music can be much more than pure escapism. But both acts — writing and listening — offers some very slight calm in the face of vast uncertainty (or, like, at least a temporary escape from NHK looping clips from Home Alone 2 in a subtle reminder “wow, you guys really did this huh?”), and sometimes you need temporary escape. So…here is some borderline cartoon-theme music courtesy of Maltine Records, featuring a lot of talented people. Temporary sugar rush? Yeah, but I imagine we could all use it. Get it here.

  • New mus.hiba: “Slow Snow”

  • New Lemon’s Chair…Or Is It New Lemona/Masashi Imanishi?

All the names flying around Lemon’s Chair’s MySpace at the moment leave cartoon cuckoo-cuckoo clocks orbiting my skull. The two new songs featured in the player on Lemon’s Chair site credit “Lemona/Masashi Imanishi.” I know Imanishi’s a proper member of LC, but what’s Lemona? Like a low-calorie alternative? The two recent additions definitely strike a…

  • Vocal Studies: Learning And Science Learning And Science EP 01

The electronic pop unit Learning And Science veer between retro and contemporary across the four songs on their debut EP Learning And Science EP 01. From the opening bleeps of “Dagasiya,” the pair establish a throwback technopop vibe, one indebted to the late ’70s/early ’80s vibe of Yellow Magic Orchestra and the many synth-powered outfits…

  • New Anisakis: “海岸通りをあるく話”

Anisakis’ earlier recordings rarely sound fun, veering closer to black hair dye and Bauhas than popular kids party. Yet new song “海岸通りをあるく話” finds the group almost letting loose. The vocals still remain murky, muddled a bit in the mix, and the chorus consists of nothing but the lead singer screaming bloody murder. So far, not…

I wrote about it for International Tapes, so go over there to read my thoughts on it. Quickly – I think it is one of the better indie-pop releases of…
