New Shortcake Collage Tape: “✈Empire≈Beach☼”

Shortcake Collage TapeのVHSに直接録音したようなサウンドがとても好みです。新曲”✈Empire≈Beach☼” は、過去の名曲”Polaroid Full Of Kisses“にファズのようなフィルターをかけて潰したような作品です。”Empire Beach”は南国風のヴァイブを持っていて、ビーチリゾートのプロモーションで使われていそう。特に印象的な瞬間は、１分４０秒くらいの時にスムーズなジャズ・サックスが流れる時で、その穏やかな瞬間にいつまでも留まりたくなります。その後、アニメか映画のサンプルが呟き始め、曲の終わりとともに消えていき、最後に沖縄と囁きます。視聴は以下から。

あと違った意味で注目すべきは、一ヶ月くらい前にリリースされた”Meet Me In Your Dreams”で、これはとても笑わせてくれます。何が面白いかというと、この夏、YouTubeで動画を再生する際に頻繁に流れた、元SDN48の芹那ちゃんが出演していたコマーシャル、芹那 ザ ジレット ジェルジニーがサンプルネタになっているからです。何はともあれ、SCTが彼女の喋りを使って面白くユニークな作品を作ったのは素晴らしい事だと思います。

    オタク文化は長い間アニメやアイドル、そして漫画等と関連していた為、秋葉原にある全ては敬遠されがちでした。その周辺の音楽も例外ではなく、AKB48の名前を聞くだけで嫌がる人もいますよね。でも今年に入ってからはそのオタク文化が他のジャンルと上手く解け合ってきている気がします。アニメのサンプルは数々のインディーポップ作品に使われていますし、Shortcake Collage Tapeからも、Fazerockのダンスミュージックからも聴く事が出来ます。ボーカロイドをユニークに使うmus.hibaや、アイドルグループの東京女子流とタッグを組んでリミックス作品をリリースしたネットレーベル、Maltine Recordsも興味深いです。あまり認めたくはないのですが、AKB48の”Uza”もなかなか良かったです。 そしてアメリカ出身のChibi-Techは何と…EDMとメイドカフェの世界観を融合させた２曲を発表しました。作品名”Moe Moe Kyunstep”はそんなお店で働いてる店員さん達のセリフをもじったタイトル。でも曲は決してカフェで演奏するようなスタイルではなく、あくまでクラブ用です。一曲目はぶっちぎりのチップチューンなのですが、Chibi-Techはゲーム会社で働いているため納得です。AKB48をスーパーマリオブラザーズ２のフィルターを通して愉快に歌わせたような雰囲気が好印象。２曲目ももっと注目されるべきだと思っています。彼女の放つ特徴的な8-bitの音はスクリレックス風のブローステップに吸い込まれていき、一時は可愛らしかったNESの音はしだいに攻撃力を強めていきます。FazerockやMaltineも似たような事をやっているし、Youtubeには数多くの8-bitブローステップはあるのはわかっているのですが、その中でも”Moe Moe Kyunstep”は本当によく作曲されていると思います。試聴はこちらから、購入はこちらから。 Moe Moe Kyunstep by chibi-tech

    大阪のSarahry Recordsが９月２２日に境のパンゲア・カフェでイベントをやるみたいです。80年代にイギリスにあったインディ・ポップレーベル、Sarah Recordsに捧げるイベントで、大阪で注目を集めるギター・ポップバンドが数々出演します。コンピレーション・アルバムも発売される予定で、出演バンドの曲や、Sarah Recordから生まれた名曲などがカバーされ、収録される予定です。ネットにアップされているのも同じ観点から制作されていて、Wallflowerによるブライターの”Does Love Last Forever?”のカバーや、 Lilacによるヘブンリーの”Cool Guitar Boy”のカバーからは、ギター・ポップに対する愛や誠意が伝わってきます。でも、フィールド・マイスの”Emma’s House”はFandazeによってちょっと調節されすぎていて、テンポがゆっくりになってたりします。（私が一番好きなインディ・ポップの曲なのもあって）やっぱりオリジナルのほうがいいな、って思います。 ページへはこちらから。視聴は以下から。Backyard Party in Popability! by Sarahry Records 他のニュースといえば、Traffic Lightが、長年続けられてるアン・アーバーのプロジェクト、サタデイ・ルックス・グッド・トゥー・ミーとスプリット・EPを出した事です。渋谷のViolet And Claireストアか、ネットでもこちらのサイトから購入可能です。現在視聴はできないのですが、ベテランと組んでのリリースはTraffic Lightにとって大きなステップなのではないでしょうか。

New Shortcake Collage Tape: “✈Empire≈Beach☼”

Shortcake Collage Tape sounds best when his music seems recorded straight to VHS. New song “✈Empire≈Beach☼” (sorry, no symbols from here on out) resembles the excellent “Polaroid Full Of Kisses” from earlier this year, as SCT filters the whole track through fuzz. It has a tropical vibe to it, “Empire Beach” sounding like it could double as a theme to a well-worn copy of a beach resort promo. The key moment, though, comes at the minute-forty mark, when a smooth-jazz sax slides in. It is a fantastic sound that I wish lasted a little longer. It sticks around to accompany what I presume to be an anime sample, but vanishes as the song warps to an end and a voice mentions Okinawa. Listen below.

Also worth checking out…at the very least for some laughs…is the month-old “Meet Me In Your Dreams.” It is a nice enough track, but the real reason it sticks out to me is that it’s just a Japanese ad from this year manipulated into this glitchy little creation. Specifically, SCT samples this really fucking annoying Gillette ad that played before every YouTube video I watched this summer starring Serina The Gillette Gel Genie. The fact SCT made her sound interesting is damn impressive.
