New Taquwami: “Gossip 1” And “Gossip 2”

Think Taquwami is starting to fall for blog-platform Tumblr? Can we expect a barrage of .GIF files and essays about Degrassi? Probably not, but the Tokyo producer did go and post two new tracks to his Tumblr page over the weekend, “Gossip 1” and “Gossip 2.” The prior opens in a haze before pivoting into a minimalist slink, one that’s both a nocturnal creeper and a touch groovy. Listen to that one here. The better “Gossip,” though, is “2,” which retains the barely-there quality of “1” but adds an element of intrigue via some far-off vocal samples. It’s a blurry, inviting number. Listen to it here.

    日本のインディー・ポップ界は今年も素晴らしい曲を多く生み出しているのは確かですが、男性アーティストが大半を占めているというのが気がかりです。女性メンバーのいるバンドも多いのですが、彼女達は中心的な存在とは言いがたいでしょう。大阪のTwinkle Twinklesを除けば、女性のみのバンドというのもレアでしょう。私の記憶が正しければ、数ヶ月前にリリースされたC86のテープでさえ、多くの新しいアーティストをフィーチャーしていたのにも関わらず、女性メンバーのいるバンドはSlow Maricoのみでした。いったいPuffyshoesは何処へ行ってしまったのか？ でも最近結成したJolie Joliはtwee的な可愛げのあるインディー・ポップを奏でています。現在女性二人でドラマーを探しているみたいなのですが、タイガー・トラップ、ヘブンリーやカブといった90年初期の北米インディー・ポップ、それも女性メンバーのみのグループから濃く影響を受けています。Jolie Joliはまだ持ち曲が少ないものの、”Dreaming Girl”を聞くと、秘められた大きな可能性を感じます。シンプルな曲は明るく楽しいギターやドラムをフィーチャーし、その上で遊ぶボーカルとコーラスがとても可愛らしく、このような女性メインのバンドが増えるといいな、と思わされます。視聴は以下から。

  • Youth Genius (NOKIES! Solo-Member Project)

    関西のロックバンド、NOKIES!がデビューフルアルバム、”Between The Blinks”をFlake Recordsとタワーレコードからリリースしました。Los Campesinos!のようなインディーポップが特徴的な彼等でしたが、今作品では良い意味で幅広い層から好かれそうな雰囲気。タワーレコードからのリリースも違和感なく、これからバンドはどんどんメインストリームなロックバンドとして成長していきそうですが、ボーカルのクメユウスケはそのような方向性とは違ったものをYouth Genius(Youth LagoonとPerfume Geniusの融合みたいな感じかな？）として表現しています。 Soundcloudには、”All of the songs is inspired by peculiar atomosphere created by the streets and youth of Kyoto city,”(京都の若者やストリートが持つ独特な空気感が楽曲に影響を与えている。)と書かれているのですが、その通り京都の若者達は個性的なスタイルを表現していて、Youth Lagoonは少しばかりのエレクトロ要素を持つインディーポップと、跳ねるようなファンクを融合していて、哀愁とワイルドさのバランスを上手く保っています。”Explains”は直球勝負なインディーポップで、センターに配置されたキーボードがとても良い存在感。”Behind You”と”Stay Above The Clouds”は多くの打ち込みが使われていて、今年に国内でリリースされたインディーポップの中でも特に目立っています。そして”We Keep Kissing”はクラブ的アノラックサウンドが、The Brixton Academyが本気を出してダンサブルな楽曲を作ったかのような印象。Youth Geniusみたいなプロジェクトがあることで、NOKIES!の方向性もどんどん進化していきそうですね。
