Smooth It Goes: Keiji Community’s Wastelands

The title and cover art of Keiji Community’s newest collection brings to mind something a bit…heavier (I had a …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead vibe)…than the smooth, synthpop that actually comes out when you hit play. But hey, the end result is solid. Wastelands is an easy-to-digest, catchy four-song set featuring all-English vocals, with some nice sonic details. Opener “Lonely Waters” features some moments of digi-distortion behind the otherwise easy-flowing singing, while “Caught Up (I Think Keiji Is Lost)” precedes an otherwise hip-shaking R&B number with a sample seemingly pulled from anime. Still, the main appeal here lies in just how direct and catchy these cuts are – primarily on the bubbly fianle of “Beautiful Wasteland,” which highlights the fact Keiji Community sounds best when beaming brightly.

“My Unterritory” seemingly falls apart at the seams. • New Shortcake Collage Tape: “In Your Gentle Rain”

In the past, Azusa Suga’s Shortcake Collage Tape project has drawn a feeling of longing for the past…whether experienced or nostalgia for an idea of older times…from samples. His still-absorbing Spirited Summer used clips from an array of sources (anime, YouTube pre-roll ads, classical music) to build an out-of-time listen, more or less a vaporwave…

  • THE DIM

THE DIM play garage rock covered with bloghouse signifiers – their songs revolve mostly around guitar and drums, but the four-piece pushes in dashes of synths worthy of Hipster Runoff. Not much info about this band exists and they only have three songs streaming over at their MySpace, but the trio of tunes are pretty…
