New M/D/G (Madegg): “?????”

Based on a recent posting on Flau’s site, it is tough to tell whether Kyoto’s Madegg recent rechristening as MDG…or, is it M/D/G?…is a permanent thing or just a temporary shift. What is certain — he has a new EP (also titled M/D/G) out in March, and he’s shared the first song off of it, called “?????” Whereas his recent EP via No Credit Records…as MDG…saw him moving a beat away from clattering beats, “?????” is loaded with them…along with bubble-pop percussion and unsettling vocal snippets buried deep within the song. New Egg: Madegg Is Now MDG, Releases New EP Via No Credit Records

All signs point to Kyoto electronic producer Madegg having a big 2015…and to set himself up for the next 12 months, he’s gone and changed his name. He’s dropped all the vowels out of his name and is now going by just MDG (at least for now), and to celebrate the expulsion of letters he’s released a new EP via Kyoto imprint No Credit Records. Takao is a four-song set that ranges from one of MDG’s most straightforward shufflers to date on opener “Xanadu,” a number that strobes forward towards ecstasy…to the chilly, barely-there “Frothcoming,” more of a field recording of what sounds like a desolate backalley than a song. The backside pair of songs are more like “Xanadu,” and find MDG moving a touch away from the heady beats of his past and embracing something a bit more euphoric in the new year. Listen above.

Slow Delight: Uma’s Roam Featuring Remixes From Magical Mistakes And Madegg

Osaka-based label Perfect Touch has a new release out now, fronted by Berlin duo Uma and their beautiful-quicksand tune “Roam.” The original is a slow waltz of a number, highlighted by vocal repetitions amongst the ever shifting noises whirring around it. The power of that singing being milked for all it is worth is picked up by one of the main minds behind Perfect Touch, Magical Mistakes, on his remix of “Roam,” which melts the vocals down into shapeless form (unlike the original, which has intelligible words) and builds from there. Rounding out the EP is Kyoto’s Madegg, who doesn’t focus on the voices as much and rather makes the most of the music…and some very Madegg-ish percussion choices late in the song. New Madegg: “WKAAFS”

The “about” section might be the most intriguing part of this – “WKAAFS” comes from Madegg’s forthcoming fourth album, release date unknown as of now. This song, complete with minimalist video, is a relaxing enough preview, swapping out the clitter-clatter production the young Kyoto native has favored for most of his career in favor of guitar plucks and woozy electronics. Lunchtime Listen: New Metome “Salamander” And Madegg “Saying”

Ahhhh, the beauty of summer vacation. For the next…week…I get to just relax at home (without too much work to do!). Which means I can listen to music I’ve missed while eating lunch. Alright, let the good times roll. Today brings two new tracks from a pair of Kansai’s finest producers going. Metome has had a big year, and he just keeps rolling out new songs. “Salamander” is a jittery electro stepper with some neat details (a soda can opening!) to keep you focused as the synths roll all over the place. Listen below.

Disorienting in a different way is Madegg’s “Saying,” which features the title delivered all metallic-like and dog barks. Not cute dog barking, either. It’s also not as manic as Metome’s track, going for a more understated type of whirl. Listen below.
