New TalkingCity1994: “Life Goes On”

I had a discussion about death last night with a friend. Well, it wasn’t directly about death, but rather a conversation about other topics – natural disasters, moving, trying to find a new job – that oftentimes carry underlinings of fate, the uncomfortable shadow of inevitable decay. Not the most upbeat material for 3 A.M.

Thankfully, TalkingCity1994 are around to throw a water balloon in my face and tell me “Life Goes On.” For subject matter that could be melodramatic, this Osaka band sure has delivered with a skip in their step and cheap-ass synths blaring – the whole song sounds goofy about the truth and that ends up being…really welcome. Kansai Update: Madegg, TalkingCity1994

Time for our weekly stop by Madegg’s place to see what’s new…surprise, new music! I’ve had small debates with people about the Kyoto producer’s decision to flood SoundCloud with so much music – they say it goes too far, to the point where keeping track of EPs and other releases becomes an extremely difficult task. I think that, though the dude does release a lot, he manages to make his EP and (forthcoming) full-length releases stand out, the stray songs surrounding them being treats in advance of the main meal. Here, then, are some snacks fresh out of Madegg’s proverbial kitchen. Well, “snacks” may not be the right word, as “Fall” and “Winter Minder (Extended Version)” are some of the longest tracks in Madegg’s ever-increasing collection. “Fall,” which you can hear below, is especially impressive, a moody piece incorporating natural sounds.

TalkingCity1994 also aren’t strangers to releasing a lot of music, so “Common Song” springing to existence on a random Wednesday isn’t surprising. What is a bit of a jolt – how catchy it ends up, especially given the vocals sounding like they were filtered through a broken kazoo. Yet TalkingCity1994 still manage to hit on a catchy melody that makes the rougher touches easier to swallow. Listen below.

New TalkingCity1994: “My Jenifer”

TalkingCity1994’s I Can Feel Your Soul was a constantly chugging affair. That’s not to imply it was 20 minutes of non-stop aggression, but even the lighter moments, moving forward on old-arcade-machine synths, moved with intent. The band’s latest track, “My Jenifer,” isn’t an about-face into ambient music, but it finds TalkingCity1994 moving a lot slower than anything on I Can Feel Your Soul, and sounding very sweet. The keyboards go a long way to establishing this mood, more subtly used than on most of the EP’s songs. If anything, “My Jenifer” has less in common with the home-made pop of John Maus and feels more indebted to nostalgic indie-pop, the only thing really making you think twice about that tag is the electronics smeared over this. Make Believe Mix For March 2012 Featuring Madegg, DUB-Russel And Rapunzel8083

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/41754116″ iframe=”true” /]

March ended up being a bit of a strange month, at least by the looks of the mix. There are moments of straight-forward pop, like on TalkingCity1994’s “Long Hot Summer Remembered” and The Mari On The Beach’s “AM Boy/FM Girl.” Yet even those otherwise pleasurable cuts go through filters that turn them into stranger things. Elsewhere, Madegg acts like Madegg, while Tokyo’s DUB-Russel offer up a cacophonous number that is far more than just noise. Finishing the mix is Rapunzel8083’s constantly morphing “月光,” a journey all its own.

Below is a list of artists and songs appearing in this month’s mix, in chronological order. Click the links to read more about them and find out how to buy/get their music. All artists featured gave me permission to include their music in this mix.

OMEGA Growth: TalkingCity1994

Osaka producer OMEGABOY has posted a steady stream of material since late last year, occupying a stylistic zone somewhere between hip-hop and traditional Chinese music, all dabbed in a lo-fi varnish resulting from his bedroom workspace. His best moments so far have been when he ventures beyond pure instrumental and tries crafting weirdo pop, adding his (manipulated) voice to the Famicom blur. Those instances, though, have been spread out between all sorts of instrumental work, which is often intriguing but lacks the double-take-inducing daring of his buffed out songs.

Now, OMEGABOY has found an outlet making the best use of his VHS-synths – he’s part of an Osaka band called TalkingCity1994, and they just released an EP called I Can Feel Your Soul that merges his electronic experimentations with a cast of guitars and drums that form a body around his work. The year in the group’s name is misleading – like a lot of home-recorded projects in Japan, this brings to mind the 80’s, and TalkingCity1994’s synth-heavy rock just dares you to compare it to John Maus. Soul lacks the sometimes aggravating pretension clogging up his albums, and one ups Maus by going for straight-ahead catchiness the majority of the time like on the melted-ice-cream groove of “Long Hot Summer Remembered.”

The band aspect of TalkingCity1994 serves as a sturdy fence for a group of musicians who, left alone, can sometimes drift off into the wild. The star here is OMEGABOY, his bright keyboards serving as this album’s feel-able soul. On his solo productions, his synth work could sometimes wander, but guided on by guitars and drums, those noises end up the highlights of this release. The synth line that shows up in “Living In The Heart Of The Monster” has probably appeared in OMEGABOY’s own work, but pushed on by TalkingCity1994’s party-time groove it suddenly sounds vital. The plinky “I’m Drinking Lemonade” lasts only around two minutes, but what OMEGABOY does with those Tibetan-mountain gusts of synth makes every second memorable.

What’ most exciting about TalkingCity1994 is that this is a group seemingly shaped by the sounds of modern Japan rather than overseas acts. Maus initially seems like a good comparision, but the strobe-light synths dancing over “Beginning Of The End” bring to mind The Brixton Academy, OMEGABOY wringing the same sort of ennui out of his electronics without the aid of singing. The entire Soul release sounds most touched by fellow Kansai outfit Hotel Mexico, down to the at times boombox-worthy recording quality. It’s a leap forward for OMEGABOY, but also a good sign for the Japanese music community. Get here, or listen below.
