New Stones Taro: Scarf EP

One of the earliest pieces of music writing advice I received was…don’t dwell too much on album art. But let me just take a second to note how new Kyoto-based label NC4K has established a great visual sense so far into their existence, with a cartoony psychedelic element that I really hope they continue to embrace. And it’s fitting for the music they’ve put out so far — this is the real no-no of bringing up images and music, but whatever! — as it gels well with the loose-limbed bounce of Pee.J Anderson’s “Move” and, now, Stones Taro’s Scarf EP. At it’s best, the producer’s latest indulges in some zoned-out fun, best laid out on the title track. That one is content to let synth notes — both wispy and thick — float by like a puff of smoke, with cowbell propelling the song forward. The rest of Scarf tends to be more energetic, though even something more up-tempo like “Portrait Of A Mind” features these electronic wooshes that give the track a spaced-out vibe. “Latin Dream” — and many of Tokyo producer Fire Emjae’s recent output — takes me back in time, to a very specific year. Hitting play on SoundCloud for this one transports me to 2012, when high-energy dance tunes featured pitch-shifted slices of singing ping-ponging between twisty beats and synth blurts. The bongo precessions opening the…

When you need a little burst of energy during a busy day, Osaka’s Satanicpornocultshop always comes through. The juke-leaning collective’s new Green Papaya EP zeroes in on percussion, with nearly every track here interlaying different beats over one another to create shuffling rhythm tracks. It runs from the sparse, skin-tingling wooden sounds of “Mouthwash” to…

  • New Yunomi Featuring Rinahamu: “Fashion”

Yunomi’s colorful blasts of dance music rarely leave space for detail, but “Fashion” excels at the small stuff. It works well as a Technicolor rollercoaster ride too, with guest vocalist Rinahamu (from Yunomi-produced outfit CY8ER providing higher-pitched vocals) guiding the song from dramatic verses to ragin-out drops. But that’s also familiar — Yunomi has proven…

  • Ryuuta Takaki’s Stillness EP
