New Antenna Girl Featuring Tomggg: “Superstar”

You can make a strong case that Tomggg ushered in the current wave of “kawaii” electronic music coming out of Japan (and abroad). Yet even if you don’t want to go that far, he’s was undeniably ahead of the curve. But Tomggg has proven restless and, at a time when the producer could easily ride out on chimes, xylophones and other assorted playroom elements, he’s pushed himself to create music utilizing the same palette of sounds, but aiming for something more refined (without losing the club edge). Last year’s Art Nature was one foot forward, a set featuring collaborations that made more room for songs to breathe, adding some drama into his sugar-shot music. It didn’t always click, but pointed towards new ambitions.

“Superstar” provides further growth for Tomggg. It is a song belonging to Antenna Girl, and she has a higher-pitched voice that would suit his more frantic kawaii rave ups…and looking at the line-up of her first album out this month, that is kind of what is happening. But part of this song’s intrigue comes from how that isn’t the case, but rather used alongside slow builds that don’t explode. The twinkles and chimes remain, but they are joined by strings and stretches where the light falls completely on Antenna Girl’s voice (fitting, as this is her song). And this slow burn makes the moments when Tomggg lets the song burst open all the more exciting. Listen above.

New LLLL: Chains “Phase 2: Remain”

New month means a new installment of LLLL’s “Chains” series, and we’ve reached the time for an EP. Which, in one writer’s humble opinion, is a welcome arrival after a busy five days. Chains “Phase 2: Remain” moves in a more meditative direction than the Phase 1 EP, the songs here featuring guest vocalist Yeule and the singer who has worked longest with LLLL. Opener “Seals” is the new track, and it is a mid-tempo reflection featuring Yeule, the heavy stomp countered by synth notes that give the song an airy, optimistic feel. Like the other two (previously released) songs here, it’s on the reflective side, which gives “Phase 2” an atmosphere optimal to soak in. Get it here, or listen below.

New Have A Nice Day!: “Fallin Down”

Have A Nice Day! excel at getting the most out of just a little. Over the past couple of years, the band has created big, dare-we-say-anthemic songs using a relatively sparse set up — synths, simple beats, some guitar, maybe a sample or two if they are feeling luxurious. And they like to find a phrase or two, and say it a lot. New single “Fallin Down” isn’t just the phrase “fallin down” for just over five minutes, but it is definitely what comes through the most, all over keyboards that twinkle off for the whole run. Simple, but it ultimately only underlines the emotion Have A Nice Day! are so good at digging out of sound. Listen above.

New Satellite Young: Satellite Young

After a series of ’80s-tinged songs released as singles, synth-pop revivalists Satellite Young have released an eponymous album. Springing off of recent posts touching on various shades of backwards-appreciating music, Satellite Young is unabashedly…and gleefully!…channeling Bubble era pop, loading it up with neon synthesizer and the type of singing that would make the golden age of idols smile. No games, no irony…Satellite Young tells you what they like, and then execute an incredible imitation, full of sticky choruses and seemingly cheesy details that actually end up essential for a project so zeroed in on a specific feeling. Lots of familiar earworms reappear — “Sniper Rouge,” “Geeky Boyfriend,” the still-shimmering “Don’t Graduate Senpai!” — along with some new ones (or at least ones I forgot about), including a slow-burning, Vocoder-splashed last dance of a song seemingly inspired by Big Hero 6 (“Sanfransokyo Girl”). Get it here, or listen below. Also check the “Don’t Graduate Senpai!” video below.

New Le Makeup: “CNNISSEUR”

Osaka’s Le Makeup has dropped a few wonderful club mutations in the past few months, but “CNNISSEUR” comes off as the most energetic one next from the emerging producer. It merges a back-and-forth beat…one that manages to slightly unnerving in how it gets punctured by sudden bursts of percussion…with looped rapping, which eventually collapses in on itself and turns into one big, buzzing pile of voices colliding against one another. For as busy as it gets, though, Le Makeup keeps the energy going. It appears on the Alternative Facts compilation, which you can get here. Or listen below.
