New Hideo Nakasako: Phonograph

The cosmic-eyeing beat days seem to be over, at least for Hideo Nakasako. He caught our attention two years ago with the spacey set Tiny Place a post-INNIT collection of wobbly beats featuring NASA samples. He’s put out music since, but this month’s Phonograph signals a total shift away from the depths of the universe in favor of something more inward and unsettling. His songs are still made from woozy synthesizer and vocal samples, but the sounds of a guy getting in touch with mission control have been replaced on the frantic “Left” with a warped sample breaking down on itself. Same goes for “High,” except that one is even more muddled and ominous. It’s new territory for Nakasako, but intriguing stuff. Get it here, or listen below.
