Tastes Like Hype: Ice Cream Shout

Western media coverage of the Japanese music scene in 2010 seems to be following a very recession-friendly pattern – stick to what people know. So that means something like “Boris, Boredoms plus associated acts, maybe check in on Shugo and Afriampo if we have space.” Can’t really blame them – there is so much music to get to from the western hemisphere taking time to hunt down great Japanese groups obviously wouldn’t end up priority number one. So, when a new-ish act grabs the attention of the ever-fickle blog world, it deserves some dap. Two such outfits have made a splash in 2010 – first it was chillwavers (sorta) Hotel Mexico, now it’s indie-poppers Ice Cream Shout.

A whole slew of blogs…culminating in blog-depot Altered Zones getting in on the action…have written something up on the quartet’s latest single “Tattooed Tears.” Deservedly so…it’s a breezy blast of a song, one of the dreamiest indie-pop numbers of 2010 from any question. Chilly synths brush over a stroll-worthy melody as the lead singer swoons, sounding both content and longing. Most blog write-ups pin “Tattooed Tears” as an 80s throwback which is true…I see ya, Smiths-jacking “Heaven knows I’m miserable now” opening line…but seeming way more shaped by the sunny retro-pop streaming out of Sweden on a daily basis. I could throw out countless names…The Radio Department, The Honeydrips, even flex my Swede-pop muscle with Boat Club…but it’s less being influenced by any of those groups and more subscribing to a similar blueprint when it comes to crafting these sorts of sun-dazed pop songs (not to mention the potential for subversion…the ghostly vocal samples around the corners and the song’s video follow in the great tradition of Swedish indie-pop bands making these songs way more political or just plain mysterious than they initially appear). However you want to approach the track, though, it’s hard to deny it.

Ice Cream Shout aren’t crashing the scene – they have an entire other album, released in 2009, out there. It’s called Cups and you can listen to a few tracks here. My Old Kentucky Blog has a nice write-up about that album, and I’d advise you to read that so I don’t have to waste words saying stuff a handful of other bloggers have already said. Two points though – first, what does “J-pop-by-numbers” even mean? I always assumed J-pop meant “pop music from Japan” and the only time it referred to a real style was when someone was making fun of Japanese music. I mean…Perfume, SMAP, The Bawdies, Funky Monkey Babys and Beat Crusaders are all J-pop but they sound nothing alike. It’s lazy writing. Secondly, “Disko Kitten” rocks, J-pop or not.

Twee Grrrls Club Prep Grrrls Talk Compilation, Deliver On Twee Guarantee

DJ unit/fanzine makers Twee Grrrls Club know how to throw a indie-pop-tastic party. Trust me, I sorta went to one. The good-times outfit, which counts HNC and Miila (together known as Love And Hates) will release a compilation album titled Grrrls Talk on October 6. They’ve got a good tracklist in place – expect to hear cuts from The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Love Is All, Allo Darlin’ amongst a slew of other indie-pop acts. If you’ve been slipping on getting your fill of jangly pop music lately…or just want a fun little mix that also comes with a special edition of the group’s fanzine…give this a whirl. Listen to another track featured on the CD, Kinght School’s remix of The Drum’s “Let’s Go Surfing,” below, but first the tracklist.

Piano Lessons: Sayutony

The piano isn’t the only instrument Osaka duo Sayutony’s rely on – the vocals and sudden drum beat erupting midway through “In Your Heart” give that ballad its punch – but it is the central tool to their whimsical little songs. Indie-pop standout “Dog Skip” follows the jaunty piano’s lead for four minutes, rarely straying from the punchy melody made by those keys but instead building around them. The singing and drums get more room to stretch…especially the vocals, which get a chance to jump up a few levels later in the track…but the piano serves as the anchor for a sunny little bit of twee. The two slower songs here similarly rely on the ivories, but more in the way any ballad would (for added drama, though Sayutony don’t get as mushy as most J-Pop artists tend to do). Pleasant little songs to start the week off.

New Love And Hates: “Crash”

Love And Hates released so much new material near the end of 2009 I thought I’d never be able to keep up. Then January rolled along and as we tore off the first page from our new “Dilbert-A-Day” calendars, and the twee-core rap duo suddenly became surprisingly mute. A few songs made their way online in 2010, but not many.

Hopefully the uber lo-fi “Crash” signals an increase in output from LAH. It comes off as more of a demo or even a straight-to-tape experiment given the super murky quality of the whole song. It’s not as crunk as the duo usually get, instead sticking to a beat/melody combination resembling a twisted Christmas carol. The chorus focuses less on catchiness and more on making the titular noise – cymbals “crash” together as Love And Hates shout above it. It’s more of an intriguing preview of ideas rather than a fully satisfying individual song, one that hopefully means we can expect more from the duo in the near future. Listen here.

One Day Diary

Let’s get technical for a second – “indie pop” should refer to a very specific type of sound. It’s the sub-genre overflowing with “jangly” guitars and a general “sunny” theme. It’s still pretty vague, but not nearly as “twee.” Twee is a state of being, almost a choice…indie pop doesn’t necessarily need to be twee, and plenty of genres dabble in twee. Like this silly little favorite.

One Day Diary don’t sound like indie pop, but they certainly exude tweeness. The duo mostly ignore guitars on recent tracks like “Nice 2 Meet U,” relying mostly on electronics and vocal distortions to carry the track. Even more beat-centric is the curiously named “Lullaby 4 Funk Monks.” It sounds like a bedroom-produced dance single, but still screams twee mostly courtesy of the ennui-tinged lyrics. They are sweet songs, which you can listen to here.
