New Canopies And Drapes: “Marmalade Sun”

Canopies And Drapes’ music usually conceals an uneasy edge. Even when the tracks are twinkling dreamscapes (“Sleeping Under The Bed”) or minimalist constructions (“The Door Into Summer”), she finds a way to sneak in touches of something more sinister (the lyrics on the prior, the skeletal frame coupled with her vocal delivery). “Marmalade Sun,” from Canopies And Drapes’ forthcoming Stray Sheep’s Delight cassette, surely must hide some subversive messages, right? Well, a bunch of listens in, and it might be the project’s most straightforward song to date. It’s an uncomplicated affair – a beat, guitars, bass and some synth that sounds ripped from Talk Talk’s “I Believe In You.” It’s lovely and lush, everything sort of swirling about without losing the pop at the center of the song. And the more you listen, the more potentially complicated themes emerge. The vocals can be tough to hear, but she definitely sings the line “my fate is in his hands” which is dramatic for what sounds like an otherwise happy love song. Time…and dozens of further listens…might reveal more undercuts, but for now this is just a good song all its own. Listen below.

New Canopies And Drapes: “Marmalade Sun”

ビート、ギター、ベース、そしてTalk Talkの”I Believe In You”を彷彿とさせるシンセ。
