Checking In: Himuro Yoshiteru’s Fushigi Man EP

Himuro Yoshiteru has been making electronic music since the ’90s, and he’s been putting out his jazz-influenced works at a good clip over the last decade and a half. He’s not slowing down yet — his new Fushigi Man EP comes out via King Deluxe, and features four crackling numbers that are a treat for those craving texture in sound. The title track crunches and fizzes, with everything together just right to create a playful bounce. “Bootprint,” with its prominent stand-up bass, is more overtly inspired by jazz, but Yoshiteru adds a mechanical gloom to the proceedings. And he gets wild on the finale, “Takhos,” featuring a drum ‘n’ bass rush. Get it here, or listen below.

  • New mus.hiba: “Slow Snow”

  • New Tofubeats: “Stakeholder”

Kobe’s Tofubeats is a child of the internet, and the EPs and albums he’s released thus far in his career…both as bedroom uploader and major-label signing…have reflected this attention-deprived upbringing, one where you are always a “related video” away from falling down some new hole. His full-lengths jump all over the place, zipping from synth…

  • CRZKNY And Gnyonpix Release New Albums, Phantasmagoria And 01,999 No Gnyonpix

Two of Japan’s finest juke makers dropped new albums during the same week — and that’s not even counting both of their contributions to Atomic Bomb Compilation Vol. 4, which they both played a big role in making happen. First up is Hiroshima’s CRZKNY, who follows up his politically charged contributions to that comp with…

  • New House Of Tapes: “Rusty Pop Noise”

Sometimes Nagoya’s House Of Tapes uncovers melodic beauty in pummeling noise…and sometimes he zooms off into more discombobulated terrain, where the pretty elements only pop up in split-seconds. “Rusty Pop Noise” most certainly falls in the latter, as it is a jarring collection of piano notes and barbed synth, prone to sudden tempo changes and…

  • Synthesized Bounce: Mameyudofu’s Kouiu No Hajimete Nansuyo

Vocaloid is a weird tool and oftentimes a tough instrument to build songs around. Yet one realm where synthesized speech tends to do well is electro-pop, and Hyogo-based producer Mameyudofu shows just why on the bouncy Kouiu No Hajimete Nansuyo album, released recently. The vocals on each of the four songs are clearly that of…
